Of Mice and Men

Something to think about

Those little fur-bearing pets that come in and out of our lives, are precious to us, and are long remembered after they are gone. Dogs, cats, gerbils, mice, etc. bring great joy and a faithful love into our lives. A pastor friend of mine, down in Lakeland, Florida, has at least two alligators, and numerous snakes as pets. He raises little white mice for the snakes luncheon menu. Some of our pets are feathered, others swim around in tanks. No matter what form they take, one thing is sure and that is that we do very much love them. Rightly so. No one should bring cruelty into the lives of these little friends. In fact anyone showing a disposition to inflict violence, pain, or hardship, or who finds satisfaction in the suffering of living things should be stopped. God is the creator of all living things.

Genesis 1:20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl [that] may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. V 21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. V 22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. V 23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

He made them for a purpose. There is a real sense in which He made them for man. He gave man dominion over all of them.

Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

There is nothing that indicates equality between man and beast, not here nor anywhere else in the Scriptures. The idea of equality is insane. Even so, it is the prevalent teaching, and widely accepted opinion of the day. The new age people, the green peace folks, and the animal rights movement, would have us believe that these creatures have intellect, emotion, and will just like man. They would say that all living things have evolved within a delicately balanced environment. Then they threaten us with unfounded predictions of destruction. For that reason, man, beast, and environment are of equal importance. "Mother Earth" their goddess, must be protected, preserved, and revered, even at the expense of mankind, because all are dependent upon Her. Is "Earth Day" a universal day of reverence toward their god? Todayís man does not see himself as superior to animals but rather that he is himself an animal. This includes his moral and ethical accountability. If an animal, then why not behave like one.

Romans 1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: V. 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

Biblical creationism does not recognize the teaching as stated above. The creation narrative is the only absolute truth that answers to all human inquiries about origins. The answer is quite clear: God created. That is all we need to know. God created. It is simple: it is sublime: it is sufficient: God created. God spoke, and by Divine fiat He made the brute beasts. He commanded and they became living creatures. The living forms appeared instantly, full grown, and mature.

Genesis 1:24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. V 25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

Man, was created by the hand and breath of God.

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

The manís body was fashioned out of the soil of the earth by the hand of God. His soul came into him by the breath of God. A significant statement in

Gen. 1:26.27, And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

By a special act of God man was created and placed on earth without any connection whatsoever with the rest of the animal world. An infinite and unbridgeable division separates man from the most intelligent creature, no matter how intelligent they may appear. At the hand of God man was created with personality, a being endowed with reason, speech, will, and emotions. Some of the differences between man and the brute are seen in that man is self-conscious; the animal is just conscious. Man has the capacity for conceptualization, the power of abstraction; the animal has only perception. Man speaks words; animals make sounds, but they have no language. Man is gifted with the ability to invent language; animal sounds are the same world wide. Man has the sense of the ridiculous, and he laughs; animals do not. Man has self-determination, self-movement toward goals of his own design; animals are wholly submerged in nature and move entirely by instinct. Man was created in the image of God. Man has characteristics and capacities similar to God, The beautiful conformity to God in man lies in the fact that both reason, exercise will, and act. Man was made with a benevolent disposition, a happy and prayerful spirit, and a longing desire to promote the good of the universe. Man was made in the likeness of God in his ability to rule and have dominion. Man is responsible to God. God is a moral and ethical being and He made man in like manner. We are accountable to our Holy God. We then should maintain morality, and live by His high standard. Worship God, and Him alone. Love Him with quantitative and qualitative love. Let us continue to love our little friends. Care for them. Feed them. But do not sink down to their low estate, nor lift them up to manís high place. They are Godís gift to us. Some for pets; some for food.
