For all you folks who are currently running Windows 98 or Me, Microsoft has announced that it is ending support for those operating systems. So read up on this announcement and post your concerns and questions in this thread. Maybe it is finally time to move on a newer OS.

How to use Microsoft's Extract Command to find compressed files in a *.CAB* file
General Asprin for what ails Windows 98 & 98 SE. It is a Microsoft Knowledgebase article (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q178/7/46.asp) which explains how to reestablish thumbnails but it also restores a whole lot more. Got a problem you can't solve? Give the advise in this article a try. Some of the things this fix seems to work on are:

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods:

• Reinstall the Windows Desktop Update component. For information about removing and installing the Windows Desktop Update component, click the following article to view it in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

• Click Start , click Run , type the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:

regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll

• Fixing thumbnails not displaying (as Microsoft first advised)
• Replacing a missing New command from the right-click context menu
• Replacing a missing File Types tab in Explorer
• Replacing missing entries from the Advanced Settings box on Explorer's View | Folder Options | View tab.

  Additionally, therre is some success (but not perfect success) with:

  • Replacing a missing Send To entry on the right-click context menu
  • Restoring View as Web Page on the context menu of Explorer, View
  • Other odds and ends

• How to use the regsvr32.exe system registry tool
  If you have an application which isn't working properly or that shows some strange error message like "URLMON.DLL is not registered" or "can not perform selected task URLMON.DLL is not working".
  
  There is a simple way to resolve this issue:
  1. Click Start
  2. Click Run
  3. Type regsvr32 followed by a space and then the dll file which isn't registered (If the file is registered doing this will not harm anything)
     
     Syntax :
     regsvr32 DllFile.dll
     
     Example:
     regsvr32 URLMON.DLL
  4. This is all there is to it. the file is now registered and the system should recognize it.
