SetupStream v2.02 [2.6M] W9x/2k/XP FREE SetupStream is an application that will help you make a setup wizard
for any set of files on your computer. I can't believe how easy this
application is to use, no programming knowledge is required to make a
setup wizard. This isn't just a case of you get what you pay for, in
fact I am quite surprised that this application is free. SetupStream
will allow you to do such things as make modifications to the Windows
Registry, define a separate destination directory for each file,
create shortcuts and even display a license agreement that the user
has to accept. What I love is that I have the power to make a setup
wizard that places an uninstall wizard in my add/remove programs link,
which means I can do a clean uninstall of any troublesome installed
program.

Slide Rule v1.0 [2.1M] W9x/2k/XP FREE Slide Rule is an application for people who have a firm grasp of how to manipulate slide rule by giving you an electronic version for your PC. You can switch between four different makes of slide rules from Picket to Faber-Castell. You can also turn on and off the body and slide front. Turning off the slide front is like turning it over. So if you have a need for a slide rule on your computer then Lockergnome recommends that you download the program that bears the same name. http://www.finseth.com/~fin/realbasic/#Win
Siren v1.5 [250k] W98/2k/XP FREE http://perso.wanadoo.fr/rplr/scarabee/en/Siren.htm

{File renaming} Siren can help you rename an entire directory of files. A great way to use it is renaming your digital camera files, which often uses meaningless names like IMG123. OK, whose image is in IMG123.jpg? Beats me. If you took 20 pictures of an event, use Siren to select those 20 pictures and rename them event%n.%e. The result is event001.jpg, event002.JPG, and so on. Don't panic if %n and %e make no sense. %n is the number and %e is the extension. The help file provides a list of similar commands and what they do. I didn't like jpg in upper case, so I changed the command line to event%n.%le. The l indicates lower case. The program will display the new name and you can execute it. If you change your mind after replacing the file names, you can Undo. Nifty program.

Simple 2D Grapher v1.0 [313k] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://simplegrapher.sourceforge.net/

{Data plotter} It's been a long time since I've plotted complex data. What to do? Use Simple 2D Grapher to plot collected data, incorporating features of cricket graph for applying a function to the data. Extrapolate gradients of curves to find an equation that best fits the data and print it. The program calculates regression and can predict values. It incorporates y = a + bx and y = a + bx^2. (I'm not a math interpreter and couldn't put that in English for you - sorry!) The program is still in testing, so if it's something of interest to you - keep an eye on it for its updates. SmartGesture Lite v1.0.1 [1.2M] W98/2k/XP FREE http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106522

SmartGesture Lite enables you to launch different commands by using mouse gestures rather than keyboard input. You can open files, run programs and operating system commands, launch Web sites, and imitate keyboard input, all with a single gesture. The program comes with an easy-to-use interface and comes with pre- defined movements that can be easily assigned to your actions. It has a modern, simple, and intuitively understandable interface. SmartGesture Lite can also be used with Tablet PC. The Lite version is limited to seven gestures.

SnapShot in Time v1.01 [563k] W98/2k/XP FREE http://www.freewebs.com/dubioussoftware/

{Manage files} Take a snapshot of a drive, and it's saved as a text file. This file is the baseline. Next time, click on "View Changes" and it'll look for new, modified, and deleted files from the last snapshot to create a text file of the report. When clicking on "Show Reports," a list of reports appears in the bottom box. Right-click on a report and "Open" with a text editor to view a selected report. It's intuitive, and most people won't have to read the help file to figure out how it works. It's a good tool to have in a PC toolbox, especially when something goes wrong, since it points out what has changed since the last time the PC was behaving itself

Starter v5.5.4.2175 [423k] W9x/2k/XP FREE  Starter isn't JUST another Startup Manager, it's a piece of programming art. One of my biggest problems with Windows Task Manager is that I don't know what all the processes on my machine are, or from where they are running. In addition, Starter lets me import and export registry keys or add a new task to be processed.   http://codestuff.tripod.com/

I'm talking about an easy and unobtrusive way of keeping your programs and folders within reach -- yet out of your way. Let's say you're working in Internet Explorer when you suddenly need access to the My Documents folder. You could create a new tab to be one click away from said folder (at any time). This works for darn near everything on your system; you can even color code your tabs for quicker identification. 9 out of 10 people prefer the taste of these tabs over the leading brand.  More.../ Download Now

StrokeIt v9.2a [120k] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://www.tcbmi.com/strokeit/

{Mouse gesture} I can see you laughing at the title and the "mouse gesture" subtitle, but it fits. Most people don't use the scrolling wheel on the top of a mouse to scroll up and down a Web page, but I use it frequently because my hand is already on the mouse from clicking on a link, and it's too lazy to move to the keyboard. StrokeIt takes laziness to a new level by using the mouse to draw letters and symbols to take action. For instance, if I am on the Internet and I want to go "back," all I have to do is right-click and draw a line on the screen from right to left. Fans of PalmOS Graffiti are more likely to appreciate this functionality and know that it's possible to learn the strokes, since they're similar to the PalmOS writing style. A few applications can work with StrokeIt. If a favorite application like MS Word doesn't work with it, create new actions. A new action won't do your homework or laundry, however.

It uses a customizable list of search engines and a list of keywords. You can quickly switch results between search engines and/or the terms that you are searching for. The interface is far from pretty or user friendly, but offers good flexibility for more advanced users, as search engines can be added/edited using the proper query string. TerraClient v1.0.0.0 [1.1M] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://billfriedrich.tripod.com/

{Satellite photo viewer} See where you are in this big world. You may have used Microsoft TerraServer to find your little place. TerraClient works with TerraServer and lets you print, save images, and view a map overlay. It's the map overlay that makes it standout from TerraServer because it superimposes a "paper" roadmap over the satellite photos making it easier to find your spot. Using TerraServer and TerraClient together provides more detail than using either alone.  From what I can tell, TerraClient only covers North America. You can see a few non-North American countries at TerraServer. I found photos from France and Turkey, but not as detailed. The author of TerraClient also offers "View Rendered Source," which provides more details than Internet Explorer's Tools | View Source, including JavaScript generated HTML

The Counterscript [77k] W9x/2k/XP FREE {Stop telemarketers} Like most of you out there, I'm not a fan of telemarketers. I started receiving an unheard-of number of calls from solicitors, so I started screening my calls. This got tedious very quickly, and the call volume wasn't going down so I decided to make it my duty to mess with these telemarketers. I started out by playing really unintelligent (Not a real stretch) on the phone, and then moved on to transferring them to local datelines, but now I have found the ultimate weapon. Almost every telemarketer works off of something called a telescript that helps them maintain control of the conversation... so why can't you do the same? Counterscript is just that, a telescript for you: the annoyed. Counterscript is a PDF file that helps you turn the tables so you end up asking all the questions. In many cases, the telemarketer will just get annoyed and have your number removed from their list, but if not, one of the questions is, "How did you get my phone number?" With this information, you can track down and find the source of these annoying phone calls to your home. I know telemarketers are people (They are right?), too, and they are just doing a job, but that job doesn't call for them to persist even after I say no to their product. With that being said, telemarketers beware, because now we are all armed with Counterscript!

TimeCore Solo v1.1 [4.0M] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://www.back2front.co.uk/

{Time management} TimeCore Solo is a time tracking program with a recording engine that captures time worked on a task or project. The first time you start the program, it'll request an empty folder for storing the TimeCore data and give you the opportunity to create an optional password. Enter projects and activities to track time by the categories. One caveat is the buttons don't display the entire text, and you can't maximize the screen to view the whole button text. There are no tooltips (where you mouse over the button and get a pop-up) to tell you what the buttons mean. The program automatically displays the time and date based on your system's regional settings. The reminders area is for adding "to do" items. To start recording, click on the recording area and the current time is automatically entered. To stop recording, click on the activity and tab to the end box to get the current time entered. You can save the sessions by exporting them in Excel or a text file format. It's a little clunky, but it might be the solution some could use.

TinySpell

We type an enormous amount of information every day, and sometimes well into the night too. I have never been, what you might call a great speller. Without a spell check, I come off looking like the worlds dumbest man. Okay, that may be applicable but it definitely isn't very professional and lets face it, when you email me you don't want to try and figure out what the heck I'm talking about. All good word processors have a spell checker. But suppose that you don't want to open Word just to type a memo. This is where TinySpell comes in. It site in your system tray watching what you are typing. If it notes a mistake it will alert you with a beep and the icon will change color. Simply click on the icon and you have options to use a different word which is spelled correctly. Tiny Spell also monitors what you put into the clipboard and checks it automatically again beeping if a mistake is found. This is a must have for the spelling impaired.

This utility allows you to easily and quickly check the spelling of words in any Windows application. It monitors your typing on-the-fly and alerts you whenever it detects a misspelled word. It also checks the spelling of every word you copy to the clipboard. The program comes with an American-English dictionary containing more than 110,000 words.

You can also set tinySpell to check your spelling on the fly while you are typing, and alert you by sound whenever it detects a misspelled word. The Wizard's Apprentice v1.11 [150k] W9x/2k/XP FREE {Make batch files interactive} "Batch files still are a good way to get things done. As long as the things are simple, a batch file can be exactly the right way to do it: easily written, portable, and no need to install anything to get it to work. There is one big shortcoming of batch files though: interactivity. There's not a nice way to ask the user questions. In the old days, in MSDOS, there were no questions asked. The Wizard's Apprentice allows you to ask questions from a batch file, using Windows dialog boxes in Wizard style: large dialog boxes asking one question at a time, with a Back button, a Next button and a Cancel button. It does dialog boxes for message box, text screen, file contents, edit field, radio buttons, checkboxes, listboxes, combo boxes, and a file or directory browser." One small step for a Wizard, one giant step for user-friendly computing.

WordWeb Thesaurus and Dictionary v2.0a Whether your dictionary is untouched or dog-eared and falling apart, this free program can replace it quite effectively. Not only does it include common definitions but it shows synonyms and antonyms, as well. You can use it with any word processor or as a stand-alone tool.

Its Lookup field lets you use asterisks and strings to find words in a number of different ways. If you enter *gry, for instance, the program will retrieve angry, hungry, and other words ending with those letters. You can add words to the program's database too. If you're a truly advanced wordsmith, you might find the program's hypernyms, hyponyms, meronyms, and holonyms useful.

It's unreal that a program offering these tools would be free, but it's true! The program is for storing notes, e-mails, images, and documents. The tree structure keeps the information organized as it comes with the ability to reorder notes and make duplicates. If you have documents you'd like to organize and use in TreeDBNotes, it imports TXT, WRI, RTF, HTML, Word, and Excel files. TreeDBNotes sounds like a cross between a user-friendly Lotus Notes and a more powerful Windows Notepad, and makes better use of trees than the tree-cutters messing with our rainforests.

If you don't have your calculator handy, Weather Watcher can convert between Celsius and Fahrenheit degrees. The program supports U.S. zip codes, as well as worldwide city codes.   Download

{Create tutorials and presentations} A good way to teach someone how to do something is by creating a visual, animated tutorial. Unfortunately, programs that do this can be costly. Wink can do it at no cost and it's good quality. It even has a couple of tutorials to show how it works. My company uses a similar product and from what I've seen, Wink is comparable and I created this FeedDemon tutorial on the first use. OK, so I made about three or four before I got it to this point. It can save the tutorial as a PDF or HTML file.

WinRoll v1.2.1 [45k] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://www.palma.com.au/winroll/

{Roll up your windows} Open all the windows you want, and roll up any by right-clicking once on the minimize button in the upper- right corner of the window. It doesn't shut down the program or send it to the Taskbar; instead, it leaves only the top blue bar in view, and everything below it disappears. Bring back the window by right-clicking once on the maximize button. WinRoll sits in the tray and allows you to roll up or unroll all the windows. When you unroll a window, it will unroll right where its bar is rather than maximize to the monitor's fullest.

{Get yourself organized} I'm wondering if you need another program to help keep your life in order. Ya know, one that comes with less than twelve steps. How about a calendar / diary / alarm clock combo? Not enough? Okay, then would you care about having one- click access to your contacts, lists, and mailing addresses? We'll even throw in a scientific calculator. Satisfied? Now all of that information can be wrapped up inside one (tidy) program. It's all accessible from the system tray, to boot. If you want to be organized, you have to organize yourself. Or something like that. Your mom doesn't work here. More info & Download @ Site

YTrayMagic Lite v1.0 [224] W9x FREE I love computers, but when Explorer crashes, it's never a good thing. What really annoys me (and I'm sure it annoys you, too), is that all the icons in the system tray are zapped. There's nothing for you to do except reboot. Well, hang on there, man, 'cause YTrayMagic Lite will find those elusive tray icons and put them right back from where they started.
