{Network inventory} An easy program to use, just open it and tell it to Discover the network. The two family computers are recognized, so the next thing to do is to scan them for details. This is a great tool for those with a small business or a network of family computers. It provides information on hot fixes, shares, services, and much more. Those who do tech support on a consulting basis might want to add this to their toolbox.

Omniglot http://www.omniglot.com/

{Guide to written language} Here's a place where language lovers, Trekkies (or Trekkers, so that no one will beat me up), font lovers, and J.R.R. Tolkien fans can unite. Omniglot is a resource containing over 200 alphabets, syllaberies, logographics, and other writing systems. So what does this have to do with Star Trek, Tolkien, etc.? Klingon, Romulan, and Tengwar (Elvish) languages fall under the Alternative Writing System. The site offers free foreign font downloads. Under links, you can find your name in the various languages. Go figure, "blackbird" isn't a word in the Elvish language. Ah, the pains of having an uncommon first name. My name showed up in none of the name converter dictionaries. As for the site's name, the word omniglot comes from the Latin omnis ("all") and the Greek glotta ("tongue") and means "proficient in all languages" or "having knowledge of all languages." All tongue? Sounds tongue- tied to me

O&O DriveLED v1.0.74 [3.4M] W2k/XP FREE "Have you often asked yourself why your hard disk starts up even when you aren't writing anything to it? Until now, you could only check hard disk activity by looking at the little lamp (LED) on the front of your computer. But who wants to be constantly looking under the table whilst trying to work or play games? From now on, you don't have to crane your neck anymore to see if your hard disk is currently active. Now you can use O&O DriveLED." The program takes the hard disk LED that is built into the computer and slaps it onto your screen. It provides information on activities relating to virtual drives and makes it possible to see the difference between disk-reading and disk-writing activity. http://www.oosoft.de/english/products/oodl/

Phoxel Unit Converter [1.2M] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://www.geocities.com/phoxel/

{Unit conversion tool} Phoxel Unit Converter converts any unit to another unit using 16 conversion topics. Topics include angle, area, cooking, computer storage, energy, frequency, length, light, speed, temperature, time, torque, power, pressure, volume, and weight. You can choose the number of decimal places, and also request to get the results in scientific notation. The interface makes it easy to dig right in, as each topic has its own tab. Pick a tab (computer storage OK with you?), enter a number to convert (2500), choose the unit of the number (megabytes), (I skipped decimal places and scientific notation, which are optional) and pressed the equal button to get the conversion in gigabit, megabit, kilobit, bit, gigabyte, megabyte, kilobytes, and byte. I've seen various converters, but I like the all-in-one package and its simplicity. Often, I find myself criss-crossed in trying to remember all the conversion unit rules I learned in grade school. It'd be nice if they were solidly ingrained in my memory, but they're not, and this is an awesome tool.

PTFB v1.06.3 Some programs pester you with their endless dialog boxes repeating the same questions. Would you like to do X? Are you sure you mean to do Y? If you know what you want and are tired of telling your PC the same things over and over, use PTFB (short for "Push the Freakin' Button"), a button-pressing utility. When a dialog box asks the PC equivalent of "are we there yet?", tell PTFB which button it should press, and the program will take care of that specific dialog from then on out. You can set the program to press the same button in similar dialogs as well.  Download from PcWorld.com or go to the authors website:

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=107384

Push the Freakin' Button (or PTFB for short) is a small tool that can automate any process that requires a button to be pressed in order to continue. It works with any Windows or application dialog and allows you to automatically press the OK (or any other) button. It can be useful to allow automated tasks to continue without delay, or to simply bypass annoying dialogs. The program is very easy to use, just drag the Button Selection Tool over the button to be clicked, and you're done. There are also advanced options available that allow you to specify a delay before clicking the button, and also to adjust the sensitivity, which allows you to make the detection more flexible for dialogs that are similar, but not always exactly the same. PTFB runs in the system tray and new dialogs can be quickly added.

RAMBooster We've all had those moments of disbelief when we watch our computer freeze up. RAMBooster can give you a good ounce of prevention. The free program lets you monitor Windows' use of your precious RAM, and if it falls below a specified level, the utility will set off an alarm or automatically boost your available RAM. It does this by scrubbing the info that was previously in your RAM--flushing your cache--telling Windows to relocate everything to the swap file. One of the downsides to this is if you open a program for the second time, it won't open as fast as it would if it was in your RAM. However, the tradeoff for this is that the program can use RAM much more efficiently--and when your system would otherwise slow down or freeze up, it will remain stable.

RegShot Track Hidden Changes to Your System
We downloaders tend do a lot of installing and uninstalling, increasing the likelihood of something unsavory happening to our registries. RegShot lets you take a snapshot of your registry, then compare it with a later snapshot. This could be after making system changes or installing new software, for example. A list is then made of all the modifications that have taken place between the first snapshot and the second. You can specify folders (with sub-folders) to be scanned for changes, too. The report can be produced in text or HTML format.

Remap/Disable Extra Keyboard Buttons

Remap/Disable Extra Keyboard Buttons

Many keyboards these days come with extra buttons along the top that include such functions as "Sleep", "Power Off", "Play", "Eject", and so forth. Many of these keys can sometimes go unused, and some can pose annoyances if you accidently hit them (such as the "Sleep" or "Power Off" buttons).

If you're running Windows 2000 or XP, a little program called "KeyTweak" allows you to remap or disable any buttons found on the keyboard, including the specialty buttons. After installing the program, open it up, and click on the button you want to remap/disable. Next, to disable the button, simply hit "Disable". If you wish to remap the button, you can select a new function from the drop down menu, then hit "Remap Key". All changes should take effect after your next reboot.

Restoration v2.5.14 [193k] W9x/2k/XP FREE [Restore deleted files] Didn't mean to get rid of a file? With this handy little app, you can restore files that have been deleted from the Recycle Bin (or deleted while holding down the Shift key) by mistake. Conversely, this program has another function that makes it almost impossible to restore all deleted files. (You'd want to use this to delete confidential documents, possibly embarrassing files such as the love letters you wrote to your sixth-grade crush, and so on.) This is a standalone application, so you could even run it from a floppy disk if you didn't want to install it directly on your machine. Please note that even if a file seems to be restored, there is no guarantee that the contents are correct, so please check your files after you run the program. You will probably have the best results if you make your restoration attempts soon after you deleted the files
