{Network inventory} An easy program to use, just open it and tell it to Discover the network. The two family computers are recognized, so the next thing to do is to scan them for details. Got all the info about my system (of course), and only a partial about Paul's since his is set to no privileges. The results would be different for those who are administrators of a network. This is a great tool for those with a small business or a network of family computers. It provides information on hot fixes, shares, services, and much more. Those who do tech support on a consulting basis might want to add this to their toolbox.

{Guide to written language} Here's a place where language lovers, Trekkies (or Trekkers, so that no one will beat me up), font lovers, and J.R.R. Tolkien fans can unite. Omniglot is a resource containing over 200 alphabets, syllaberies, logographics, and other writing systems. So what does this have to do with Star Trek, Tolkien, etc.? Klingon, Romulan, and Tengwar (Elvish) languages fall under the Alternative Writing System. The site offers free foreign font downloads. Under links, you can find your name in the various languages. Go figure, "blackbird" isn't a word in the Elvish language. Ah, the pains of having an uncommon first name. My name showed up in none of the name converter dictionaries. As for the site's name, the word omniglot comes from the Latin omnis ("all") and the Greek glotta ("tongue") and means "proficient in all languages" or "having knowledge of all languages." It also comes with a cool feature that dynamically changes the clock background to reflect the current time of day. You can choose from three different display sizes, use your own background images, and also download additional themes.

{Unit conversion tool} Phoxel Unit Converter converts any unit to another unit using 16 conversion topics. Topics include angle, area, cooking, computer storage, energy, frequency, length, light, speed, temperature, time, torque, power, pressure, volume, and weight. You can choose the number of decimal places, and also request to get the results in scientific notation. The interface makes it easy to dig right in, as each topic has its own tab. Pick a tab (computer storage OK with you?), enter a number to convert (2500), choose the unit of the number (megabytes), (I skipped decimal places and scientific notation, which are optional) and pressed the equal button to get the conversion in gigabit, megabit, kilobit, bit, gigabyte, megabyte, kilobytes, and byte. I've seen various converters, but I like the all-in-one package and its simplicity. Often, I find myself criss-crossed in trying to remember all the conversion unit rules I learned in grade school. It'd be nice if they were solidly ingrained in my memory, but they're not, and this is an awesome tool.

{Search tool} PractiSearch is a unique Web search helper that simplifies the way you access your favorite online search engines and information resources. The program allows you to create multiple notebooks with custom fields for each. It includes one example XML print template that will fit a standard notebook size. The template can be edited by hand to fit other sizes as well. The program supports http and e-mail fields, different tab layouts, search across notebooks, and more.

PSPad editor is a programmer's editor with support for multiple syntax highlighting profiles. It comes with a hex editor, CP conversion, text differences, templates, macros, spellcheck option, auto-completion, Code Explorer and much more. The program is pre-configured for the most popular programming languages (VB, C++, SQL, PHP, ASP, Python, etc.), and you can further customize the syntax settings. PSPad includes several additional tools that are especially useful for HTML editing (compress, format code) and also integrates TopStyle Lite and TidyHTML. PureText is a useful tool to convert clipboard text into plain text and remove all formatting. Usually, if you copy/paste text or paragraphs into a word processor or other rich text-aware application, it will maintain all formatting, including hyperlinks, etc. PureText runs in the system tray and can convert the text in the clipboard with a single click. Optionally, it can also paste the converted text directly into the document. The pasted text will have all formatting removed.

Push the Freakin' Button (or PTFB for short) is a small tool that can automate any process that requires a button to be pressed in order to continue. It works with any Windows or application dialog and allows you to automatically press the OK (or any other) button. It can be useful to allow automated tasks to continue without delay, or to simply bypass annoying dialogs. The program is very easy to use, just drag the Button Selection Tool over the button to be clicked, and you're done. There are also advanced options available that allow you to specify a delay before clicking the button, and also to adjust the sensitivity, which allows you to make the detection more flexible for dialogs that are similar, but not always exactly the same. PTFB runs in the system tray and new dialogs can be quickly added.

Quicknote is a small, virtual scrapbook to write down an occasional thought, a plan for the day, or an Internet URL. When not in use, the program hides as a tiny bar on top of your desktop, and when you hold your mouse over it, the interface will appear. You can type or copy/paste bits of text and even scribble down simple drawings. The program also offers some additional features, including an option to start frequently-run programs, encrypt secret texts and even change the system volume by hotkeys. It also includes an integrated Task Manager, that allows you to set reminders for selected notes, and can also shut down your PC at specified times. The interface colors can be customized to fit your personal preference and the program also supports transparency under XP/2000. You can have up to four simultaneous scrapbooks and they will be automatically saved.

No one has a monopoly on the RSS reader market and there are plenty of quality software from which to choose. The reader is easy to use and has a nice, clean interface. Click on any RSS or XML link, copy the URL, and it's automatically pasted into the reader after clicking Add. Easily one of the better free, quality feed readers and just as good as paid ones. The only thing missing is an export / import feature for sharing feeds
