It can do frequently used e-mail addresses, e-mail body, links, and more. It also allows you to use it with any application, not just e-mail or a word processor. HDClone Free Edition HDClone Free Edition enables you to move the content from an entire hard drive to another, larger one. The program installs itself on a bootable floppy or CD, and includes its own operating system, so it runs completely independent from Windows. Once HDClone has created the bootable floppy or CD for you, you can use it to boot your computer and copy the drive content to the new (installed) drive, using a graphical interface.

The free version is perfectly suitable for upgrading your existing drive to a larger one. It supports IDE/ATA/SATA hard disks and is able to copy up to 300 MB/min. The software does not recognize a USB mouse or keyboard (after boot), so you need to connect a non-USB mouse and keyboard to operate the copy interface.

Horodruin is a tool to synchronize two or more folders at once. It provides several filtering options based on file masks, access rights, and more. Unlike many other folder synchronizers, it does not use a specified target folder, but synchronizes folders among each other. You can limit copy actions with use of the masks or access rights. It's a little difficult to get started with, but quite flexible once you get familiar with it. The interface provides a preview that shows you which files are synchronized, and which ones aren't.

Intelligent Copier v1.0.0.3 [731k] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://www.interdesigner.com/freeware/IntelligentCopier/

{Moving files} This system tray application moves files based on rules. For instance, all of my zip files go into the c:\backup folder. This can become an automatic process using Intelligent Copier by creating a rule for *.zip to go into the c:\backup folder. Next time I find a *.zip file, I can drag and drop it into the Intelligent Copier, and it'll either copy or move it into the c:\backup folder, depending on the options for the file type. If the file type has "yes" in the move column, then it will move it. If it has "no," then it copies the file into the folder but also keeps the file in the folder where you found it. To make it work, go in Options | Defaults, right-click on an empty row, and select New. Enter the file specs, the destination path, and whether or not to move. From then on, any time you drag and drop the file spec into the Intelligent Copier dialog box, it copies/moves it to the destination path. Clever utility

ISO Recorder ISO Recorder
ISO Recorder lets Windows XP burn discs from ISO image files, and create ISO images from discs. Windows XP knows how to write files to CDs, but it doesn't know what to do with the .iso CD disc-image files that have become a handy way to distribute software. ISO Recorder is a shell extension that adds a new CD recording option to Windows XP's context menus. When you right-click a .iso file in Windows Explorer, the command "Copy Image to CD" appears. Selecting the command launches a series dialog boxes in which you can select the destination drive, and start recording. ISO Recorder also knows how to create .iso files from data CDs, but doesn't read or write .iso files of audio or video discs.

JDiskReport v1.1 [720k] W9x/2k/XP FREE Disk drive reporting--Turn your PC into a serious reporter with JDiskReport (the J means Java), which displays how much space files and directories are taking up on the disk drives. It also looks for obsolete files and folders. See the reports in fancy and well-done charts, which make it easy to get a snapshot of the space hoggers. Program Files, System Files, and Windows take up a little more than half of my hard drive. No surprise. Click on the next circle graph icon to see what subfolders are stealing giggies. Click on Program Files from the file tree to get graphs for that folder. There's also a list of the top 100 files that are the space thieves. You can download a stand-alone application or run it from the Web. Bonus points for an original approach to disk drive reporting. http://www.jgoodies.com/

JDN Speed Typing v1.34 [640k] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://www.jdnspeedtyping.com/

{Improve typing speed} Look out, Mavis Beacon; you have competition and this one is free. This one adds a twist of which I haven't seen. It speeds up typing with a concept called multi- press, in which you can press the keys of whole words at the same time and it'll produce the word. The Web site states the user can multiply typing speed even after one hour of training. If you only have time to do 15 or 30 minutes of training, you can pick up where you left off without disruption.

Just BASIC - Free Programming Language!
Just BASIC - Free Programming Language!

Now I am not a big program coder, nor do I play one on the Internet. However, much like yourself, I cannot say that I have never thought of wanting to give it a shot. It sounds interesting. It looks fun. So what is the problem? Well, you could probably list about thirty-seven issues that might be out there, but the number one issue is “ease of use.” Just BASIC tries to take some of those “ease of use” problems out of the equation.

After downloading the program, I have to say I was still a little confused. However, due to the genius of the developers, they have made steps to include a few tutorials to help walk you through using the product. That has helped to soften the blow a little, but I still feel like programing is a little over my head for now. Some of the features include easy source level debugging, graphics including sprites and printing, and the ability to just create a standalone program that is royalty free! {Learn to code} Don't believe the hype: Learning to program a computer doesn't have to be a heart-sinking bother! Brandon Watts has created an easy-to-use interface for first-timers and budding programmers. Beginners can learn the structure of coding without an exotic bundle of gibberish getting in the way. Applications created with Leopard are easily saved into .exe format as standalone Windows programs. As a stepping stone to more complex languages, Leopard Programming is an almost Zen-like approach toward the hallowed halls of codemonkey Heaven. Educators looking for help in demonstrating the important points of programming will find this to be a very useful tool in the classroom.

{File information} A great little utility that collects information about files and sub-folders for a selected directory or drive and generates a log. Plenty of options for customizing the results such as path, file name, folder name, extensions, file size, and save date. On top of that, the results can be sorted or not, determine the units to use for file size (none, bytes, kb, mb, gb), and specify a delimiter which comes in handy if you want to import the results into a spreadsheet. At the end of the file, it lists the number of files, folders, and the sum of the file sizes. Whew, that backup folder is a big'un!

Mailfiler v1.2 [450k] W98/2k/XP FREE http://www.mailfiler.com/

{Outlook add-in} MailFiler is an addition to Microsoft Outlook 2000 and 2002 that organizes the Inbox, handles bulk and junk mail, tracks messages, and files them. The program analyzes incoming e-mails and organizes them in a structured manner. It tracks message threads and folders used for different senders, and suggests the filing location (or you can choose automatic filing). The toolbar comes with a Junk Mail button, which you click to have spam e-mails automatically removed from the inbox. I don't use Outlook to manage my main e-mailbox, but if I could download freeware programs at the office (you know that ol' we-don't-allow- you-to-download-anything-unless-it's-on-the-approved-company- software-list-blah-blah), this would be immediately added because I like an organized mailbox. V1.3 should be out soon, and it addresses a problem with the slow appearance of the toolbar when Outlook starts up if the user has Public Folders. (If you don't have Public Folders, it's not a concern.) Probably any add-in to Outlook is a big step forward for the program.

Note: No compatibility information was listed, but this application was successfully used on Windows XP.

MasterList-XL Standard Version v1.08 [1.4M] W98/2k/XP FREE http://safarisoftware.com/

{Manage projects using MS Excel) Organize, track, schedule, and complete tasks in one place using MasterList-XL. Using the tool, create a project, business or personal task; add to-dos from Outlook or your PDA, sticky notes, and other scraps of paper. It focuses on tasks instead of time management and helps you make the most out of your time spent on the tasks. The tool comes with a roadmap (a tutorial), which should get you going within a few minutes. Though I've worked in process management for most of my career, one thing we rarely did well was creating and maintaining metrics. This tool comes with five views, including a metrics view that looks simple enough to understand with a quick glance (as metrics should be viewed).

Before running the test, close all programs and allow the test to run for at least 20 minutes (overnight is optimum).

Mocha Programming Language Build 204 [397k] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://www.hostultra.com/~numtel/Mocha/download.php

{Programming language} Mocha is a new programming language for applications distributed on a small scale. You can make simple applications. Features include "if" statements, nested functions, forms, and over 100 functions. To run Mocha, you'll need the Visual Basic 6.0 runtime file (msvbvm60.dll), the Microsoft Common Dialog Control (the latter two files download as soon as you click on the link), and VBSmart.com's XP menus and buttons controls (only for versions below 193). For the actual Mocha applications, you only need msvbvm60.dll. Run MochaDE.exe after extracting and OCX/DLL registration. Those who have an understanding of programming shouldn't have a problem figuring out the simple interface. I compiled the sample programs and it's true to its word -- for small-scale applications. FYI - adding icons to .exe (latest version) only works on 2K and XP. There's little instruction or a help file, but Jimothy Bob is willing to lend a hand through e-mail or the bulletin boards.

Monitor Calibration Wizard v1.0 [772k] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://www.hex2bit.com/products/product_mcw.asp

{Monitor calibration} This is a tool for calibrating the monitor colors. Most are too dark, too bright, or have a color tint like green or blue. Monitor Calibration Wizard can fix these problems. The Wizard in the name has two meanings: it's a wiz of a program, and it has a wizard to take you step-by-step through the process with help available throughout the process. You can create multiple profiles and customize one for each monitor to load when Windows starts. After the first go around, you can test it and look around to see how you like the display. If you don't like it, then go back and make more adjustments, retest, etc., until you're happy. Version 2.0 is coming soon, so be on the look out for more features. If you find you don't like it, you can go back to the default. Moraff's Phrase Detective Looking for an alternative to the New York Times crossword? This brain-teaser will challenge all kinds of word-puzzle lovers, and unlike your newspaper it's in 3D. In this game, you are presented with a 3D board of jumbled letters, and you have to figure out the word or phrase by swapping the letter-blocks two at a time. Each round presents a jumbled-up phrase, quotation, or palindrome that you must reconstruct in the fewest moves possible, while keeping an eye on the clock. The varying height of the letter blocks give clues as to what the word is; the higher the block, the further it is away from its correct place on the board. Choose from the sampler mode, which has 5 to 25 letters, or go as high as the Mega-mode, which has more than 100 letters.

MotherBoard Monitor v5.09 for Win9x/ME/NT/2000

All of our home PCs are now home-builts … the family refers to them as mom's "other babies", as a bit of extra fussing is lavished on them by yours truly. Part of that fussing is monitoring their motherboard and case temperatures, voltages, fan speeds (RPM) and CPU temperatures. This monitoring is easily accomplished by using the nifty freeware Motherboard Monitor (MBM).

Motherboard Monitor currently displays information about and readings (screenshots) for many popular chipsets, such as: LM75, LM78, LM78-j, LM79, LM83, LM87, GL523SM, Via686A , VIA Via686B, Via 596B , Intel i810, ADM1020, AMD756 Southbridge (SMBus), AMD755 Southbrdige, Winbond W83627HF, Winbond W83697HF, Winbond W83781D, Winbond W83782D, and Winbond W83783S . . . just to name a few!

Before running it for the first time, have your motherboard manual handy - besides indicating your UI language preference (over 14 to choose from!), you will need to specify the core voltage, and the port to be monitored (Socket 7 CPU's use port 1, Slot 1 CPU's use port 0, for example).

There are quite a few customizable options* to choose from, just some of which are:

  • AutoDetect of all sensor chips.
  • Run MBM at Windows start-up.
  • Start MBM in the System Tray (uses 1% of resources).
  • Show temperature as Celsius or Fahrenheit.
  • Integration with installed third party utilities CPUIdle and ShutDownNow!.
  • Log writing and format (.txt, .HTML, .CSV).
  • Icon font and background color choice.
  • VUMeter Scale alarm value increase/decrease.
  • MBM display window size (small, medium, big).
  • Alarm methods (display message, audio alarm, send MAPI or SMTP email).
  • Ability to adjust the percentages voltage may be off.

Download the MBM Zip archive and decompress to the folder name of your choice, then run its Setup.exe. By default, the program is installed in C:\Program Files\MotherBoard Monitor 5\. Note: With so many options, reading and following the step-by-step explanations and tips found in the included "index.html" document is advised, and will also make MBM much less daunting to new users unfamiliar with this type of utility. To uninstall, close any instance in your system tray, then use your Windows Control Panel add/remove programs option.

MPower There are many programs that don't let go of the RAM that they use when you're running them, eventually depleting your system's memory resources. MPower cleans and defragments your system's RAM, giving more stability to your PC. It also monitors the performance of hardware components like CPU speed, CPU load, and hard disk read/write speed. CPU load and memory status can be displayed on the active window title bar or on a tray icon.

MyCatalogue v1.2.3.0 [295k] W2k/XP FREE http://mycataloque.sourceforge.net/

{Catalog hard drives and CDs} MyCatalogue organizes your hard drive, diskettes, CD, and DVD files into the catalog, which can later be used for searching files and finding unique and duplicate files. CRC, as shown in the program, means "cyclic redundancy check," which extracts a 32-bit number from each file to be used as its "fingerprint." It's the process for finding duplicates. The colors provide a visual aid for comparing CRCs. When you sort by CRC - by clicking on the CRC column - it helps you spot the duplicates without comparing CRC values. To start, right-click the left-side under Catalogues. Select the drive to add group or file records.

My Own Backup This program can make compressed backups of documents, graphics, system files, and other files, and can store them on any media. The Windows Explorer-like interface allows you to select files with ease, and a backup log helps you keep track of each transaction. You also can encrypt your compressed backup and assign it a password.

As with most similar programs, you can have this utility back up at certain intervals, or drag and drop files manually. The only drawback to this program is it doesn't run on Windows Me, 2000, or XP. Author: Fredrik Johansson | Version: 2.1 | File Size: 2012KB | Price: Free
