Query Strings for Windows Media Player v6.4 through v9

Bo Note: This is not a program, but it is valuable never the less.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315959

{Troubleshooting Windows Media Player} There are switches for using with Windows Media Player to assist in troubleshooting. These switches are added in the form of a query string to the end of a requested URL. For example, the command line starts with: mms://server/content.wmv? After the ?, add the switch with its value. Switches include WMThinning, WMBitrate, WMContentBitrate, WMReconnect, WMCache, WMFecSpan, and WMFecPktsPerSpan. If you want to change the number of times that Windows Media Player will automatically try to reconnect to the content, enter: mms://server/content.wmv?WMReconnect=5. In this case, I am telling it I want it to try five times before giving up. If you don't like your PC to be a quitter, up the number.

ProcRecon v1.40 [192k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

{Non-responsive application utility} ProcRecon is a system utility that eliminates unnecessary hassle when confronted with non- responding application(s)/task(s), by encapsulating the termination process between the end-user and the operating system's Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del). The program helps users regain control of the operating system after terminating a non- responsive application(s) or task(s) through the all-to0-familiar Ctrl+Alt+Del move. As we all know, this doesn't always work, or the operating system may become unstable after unsuccessfully trying to "hang up" the hung application. ProcRecon allows the user to select programs and tasks for termination, while still keeping the system in a stable and responsive state. It comes with command-line support that is executable from Windows and the DOS prompt. Programs can be sorted alphabetically, PID numerically, or handle numerically. The program is quieter than a mouse (in the System Tray) when not in use. Instead of the computer going to DEFCON 5, put it through ProcRecon

BeClean v1.2 [1.8M] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=105938

BeClean is a system-cleaning tool that includes a Registry Cleaner, Internet Cleaner, History Cleaner, Temporary Files Cleaner, Disk Cleaner, Desktop Cleaner, and a Start Menu Cleaner. In addition, you can create customized Cleaners and specify files, folders, and registry keys of your choice. The main interface allows you to select the cleaning operations that should be performed, and you can further select which operations should be performed by each Cleaner. BeClean automatically creates a registry backup before deleting anything and, in addition, a detailed log is created. An additional disk cleanup wizard allows you to delete files based on wildcard patterns. The program does not offer any preview or detailed information for items to be cleaned, so be sure you know what you're doing when enabling the optional registry cleanups.

RealPopup v2.4 build 086 [1.6M] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://www.realpopup.it/

{WinPopUp replacer} RealPopup replaces old winpopup.exe with a full-featured freeware tool, which remains as stable and simple as its predecessor. RealPopup is compatible with system messenger services as well as old Win9x system messaging tools; in other words, it's fully integrated with your LAN environment. It supports many useful features such as hypertexts, options for users and groups, an internal network browser, auto-complete for names, and more. RealPopup is available in many languages for free. Instant messengers are applications designed to work through the Internet allowing you to communicate with people, while RealPopup is designed to communicate with your local network friends. RealPopup doesn't require any network setup or an Internet connection. It doesn't require any application server; just install it and begin to communicate. RealPopup is fully integrated with the system. For example, you'll receive messages from printer spoolers, as well as from SQL Server Agents.

RefreshForce v1.10 [164k] W2k/XP FREE http://www.pagehosting.co.uk/rf/

{Repairs refresh rate} Some users have problems with the refresh rate in Windows 2000 or XP and programs resolving the problem often only offer a temporary solution, and don't always work with new driver releases. RefreshForce universally and permanently fixes the Windows 2000/XP refresh rate problem on ANY variation of graphics cards, monitors, or drivers. It functions regardless of graphics card or driver versions. Execute the program one time, and it doesn't require a reboot. Its GUI is simple, and when starting the program, it auto-detects the optimal refresh rate of the monitor for each resolution setting and sets this new refresh rate as the default. You can stop here, apply the changes and be done, or you can do further tweaking. It has the ability to push plug and play monitor drivers over 85Hz, and supports systems with multiple display adapters. RefreshForce has an automatic backup facility and the ability to lower refresh rates as well as increase them, if software causes display corruption.

{Move windows to the system tray} Woo hoo! Woo... sorry. Here's an awesome app that allows you move a running program window from the taskbar to the system tray. The windows you need will be ready and waiting over there. It's a great way to unclutter your taskbar -- especially if you're like me and tend to have about thirty windows open at one time. Of course, it's good to keep your system tray uncluttered, too. You'll have to find a happy medium... or an overzealous fortune teller. Start using Windows -- stop having windows use you.
Restoration Restoration

We've all done it: accidentally deleted a vital file a few minutes before an urgent deadline--and then couldn't find it in the Recycle Bin. Fortunately, there's no need to panic, yet.

Restoration is a free program that can scan your hard drive, floppy diskette or USB thumb drive and find files that have been deleted (Windows doesn't actually destroy files that you delete: it just marks the space they occupy as being available). It can then recover any recently deleted files it finds with a single mouse click.

You can filter the results if you know the name of the file you are looking for, which is much easier than wading through the list of the hundreds of deleted files it usually finds (including temporary files, cached Web files, etc).

Restoration doesn't need to be installed to work. Just keep the program on a floppy or an optical disc and pop it into the drive and run it when you need it (This approach also prevents your accidentally overwriting the deleted file). Although the program has not been updated since 2004, it still worked well in my informal tests and it recovered several files that I had test deleted without problems.

Save My Desktop! v1.1 [275k] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://www.freewareweb.com/cgi-bin/archive.cgi?ID=1626

{Put the desktop back in order} I know when a spy has messed with my PC. If one thing is moved - an icon, the keyboard, the chair, or anything that touches the PC desk - I know someone has been here without authorization. Often, that someone is the four-year-old toddler who recently discovered a new talent of flooding a toilet. It was either him or an idiot tech support guy who didn't bother to leave a note! (Not knocking tech support, though, as someone near and dear to me is a manager of a tech support shop. There are just some that have neither common sense nor knowledge of how to fix a computer.) Save My Desktop! takes a screenshot of the desktop, so when someone screws with your icons and whatnot, you set the program to rearrange things the way they were before. It's not simply a "snapshot" and you put everything back together like a puzzle - it automatically does it for you. Sorry, it won't work for the things on your actual physical desk - just the icons on the desktop screen.

ScrubXP v1.1 [351k] 2k/XP FREE http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106333

ScrubXP is a one-click cleanup tool that runs in your system tray. As soon as you click it, it will delete and clean the following items: IE History, IE Temporary Files, IE Cookies, Recent Documents List, Recycle Bin, Auto-complete Entries (and Turns it Off). It also cleans the Recent File Lists for Run, Common Dialogs, Recent Documents, Search Assistant, Typed URLs, Paint, Find Computer, Printer Ports, Find Files, Media Player, Previous Tasks, and Real Player. The program runs automatically when you start your computer and additional cleanups can be performed by double-clicking the tray icon. There is no configuration; the program cleans all of the above every time it is run.

SendTo v1.5 [771k] W9x/2k/XP FREE This program will add a new option to your SendTo menu, allowing you to send a file to any folder you please. You can also use this program for sending to an FTP server. I guess this was designed for just about everyone.

ShellEnhancer v1.0b
  • 1.7M
  • Win9x/2k/XP
  • FREE

http://www.nuonsoft.com/shellenhancer

{Enhance default shell} Transparency lovers can make any open window transparent using ShellEnhancer. Add power to ALT+TAB (task switching) with two types: TaskSwticher (the one you know with a little extra power) and Mosaic TaskSwitcher, which puts a mini-screen shot of the applications in a full screen. Create tasks, which are commands that get executed such as sending keystrokes, inserting text, running a program, and so on. Those who hate it when IE doesn't maximize on loading can solve the problem by creating a task to open IE and maximize its window. The X-Window feature speeds up the process resizing and moving a window as opposed to moving the mouse to the corner of a Window to do it.

ShellToys v1.04 [2.2M] W9x/2k/XP FREE

image thumbnails; change file extensions; view folder contents without
opening them first; mask lists by file type; print folder contents;
set file attributes; and permanently delete files.

Starter v5.5.4.2175 [423k] W9x/2k/XP FREE  Starter isn't JUST another Startup Manager, it's a piece of programming art. One of my biggest problems with Windows Task Manager is that I don't know what all the processes on my machine are, or from where they are running. Starter not only gives me that information, but it also lets me save it as an HTML file. In addition, Starter lets me import and export registry keys or add a new task to be processed.

Startup Control Panel

Tired of always launching the same programs when your system boots up? This applet allows you to automatically launch programs when your system starts up. Of course, you can do that manually, by changing entries in your Registry. But this program's simple interface lets you
avoid that confusion--and best of all, the program is free.

StartRight  StartRight

When Windows boots, the OS starts all of your autoloading programs almost simultaneously. The autostart app that appears to load last is probably the one that takes the longest time. You need something that lets you control the order and insert pauses between programs. That way, you can eliminate conflicts caused by multiple programs loading simultaneously, and you can choose which program welcomes you when you start your day.

StartRight lets you reorder Windows' autoloading programs and set delays for each. The utility lacks a help file, but it's not too difficult to figure out how to use it. Rather than run an installation program, you save the StartRight.exe file in a convenient location on your system, double-click the file to launch the program, and click the Install button. StartRight then takes control of your autoloading apps. Click the Edit button to bring up a dialog box where you can change the order in which the programs load and set the pause (in nanoseconds) between program loads.
