Defrag_to_shutdown

Defrag_to_shutdown v1.0 Is your hard drive a big, old fragmented mess? But you don't want to twiddle your thumbs while you wait for Windows' Defragmenter utility to tidy things up. Defrag_to_shutdown lets you fire up Windows Defrag and let it run, then shut down your computer automatically when it's finished. You can set the utility to reboot instead of shut down if you prefer, and tell it to turn off screen saver while it defragments the hard drive. Author: Boimakra | File Size: 771KB | Price: Free

Desktop Sidebar v1.01 [4.1M] W2k/XP FREE

http://sidebarxp.w.interia.pl/

{Super-powered Windows sidebar} When Microsoft Office came out, we gained a shortcut bar on the side of our monitors to quickly access frequently-used programs. The program formerly known as SidebarXP takes the Microsoft sidebar idea and turns it into an all-purpose sidebar, giving the user instant access to daily information. The panels contain information or access to performance metrics, list of inbox messages, news download from the Internet, calendar, tasks, and the quick launch icons. The current panels offered are clock, calendar, tasks, inbox, notes, messenger, newsroom, performance, disk monitor, media player, weather, search bar, and toolbar. If you use Outlook to manage your daily activities and e-mail, Desktop Sidebar is integrated with it. Great concept, and organized folks will probably appreciate it. It'd be nice to have my sticky notes organized in a stack as shown in one of the screen shots rather than splattered all over my desktop. A suggestion for a future enhancement is to enable Desktop Sidebar work with popular e-mail clients, other messenger programs, and the PalmOS desktop. Outlook users won't need Outlook stealing most of the show when using Desktop Sidebar to summarize everything in one long, thin bar.

DLL Downloads http://www.dll-downloads.com/

{Download DLL files} DLL is short for Dynamic Link Library, a library of executable functions or data used by a Windows application. A DLL provides one or more particular functions, and a program accesses the functions by creating either a static or dynamic link to the DLL. A static link remains constant during program execution, while the program (as needed) creates a dynamic link. DLLs can also contain just data, and usually end with the extension .dll, .exe, drv, or .fon. This site lets you search for .dll, .drv, and .ocx files and download them. When you boot your PC or run a program, you might get a DLL error when a file is missing. Record the name of the file and see if the site has it. A .drv or driver is a program that interacts with a particular device or special (frequently optional) kind of software. The driver contains the special knowledge of the device or special software interface that programs using the driver do not. In personal computers, a driver is often packaged as a dynamic link library (DLL) file. OCX is short for OLE Custom control, an independent program module that can be accessed by other programs in a Windows environment. OCX controls represent Microsoft's second generation of control architecture, the first being VBX controls written in Visual Basic. Both VBX and OCX controls have now been superseded by ActiveX controls. However, ActiveX is backward compatible with OCX controls, which means that ActiveX containers, such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer, can execute OCX components. The site has annoying ads, but provides valuable information and offers it in other languages.

DirectX Drivers 8.1b

If you're looking for better performance when playing action games, or if you enjoy viewing video and animation on your PC, you should upgrade to the latest version of DirectX. Version 8.1 offers faster frame rates for multiplayer games, as well as improved audio fidelity while displaying video and animation. The drivers also provide support for the latest generation of 3D-graphics acceleration hardware.

DirectX, of course, is Microsoft's advanced suite of multimedia application programming interfaces, which lets developers write code for multimedia applications on any Windows PC, no matter what the hardware.

Notice: Some users have reported some bad karma with this version of Direct X. Others say it improves games and multimedia the way Microsoft claims it does. Bo's advice? Be sure that you have your present DirectX setup files handy in case you have a less than satisfactory performance. With the older version, if something doesn't work right, you can, at least, change back. Personally, I keep several versions on hand.

DIY DataRecovery DataBack

The general view is that, once you reformat a drive, any files there previously are relegated to the land of memories. DataBack allows you to recover deleted files to a safe volume, where you can find and use them again. It can also scan a reformatted volume for lost folders. DataBack is not a conventional undelete utility--it does not edit the logical structures of the volume containing the deleted file or folder to revive the file. To recover deleted files, you simply browse folders as if you were browsing them in Windows Explorer.

DataBack can recover deleted files and folders as long as the information has not been overwritten and the file was stored in a sequence of contiguous clusters.

DataBack can copy files and folders from a volume that was accidentally reformatted. It also requires that the current format matches the original one. For example, if a FAT32 volume of 6GB with a cluster size of 4K was reformatted with those parameters, DataBack will be able to locate folders and files after scanning the disk.   Download

Driver Detective

Driver Detective v2.0 As we all know, many hardware problems can be corrected by merely updating to the latest version of a driver. The problem is finding which hardware drivers are out of date. Driver Detective helps you with this seemingly impossible task by scanning your hard drive and displaying a list of all of the drivers installed on your system. When you highlight an individual driver, you get information such as its version number and the vendor's name. From there, you have to do some sleuthing on your own to find the site where you can download the latest driver. See the site here

EasyCleaner

EasyCleaner

If you want to clear your registry of unneeded files and slightly speed up your PC, then give EasyCleaner a try. This little, easy to use program goes through and finds all duplicate files, invalid registry entries, unnecessary file backups, and many other useless files that can slow down your computer. The best two things about this program are that it is free and it uses hardly any system resources while running. Give it a try and I'm sure you'll find it a great addition to your numerous Windows cleaning utilities.

Emergency Boot CD v0.3 Lite [3.4M] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://www.ebcd.i-am.ru/

{Bootable CD} Emergency Boot CD is a bootable CD for system recovery that comes with a set of utilities for backup, restore, repair, and low-level administration. Create backup copies of a working system so it can be restored, if necessary (we hope not!). The program can copy and move files, perform emergency boots, recover the master hard drive boot record, reallocate disk space, change passwords, and recover deleted files and data. There are two versions: Lite and Pro, and both are free. However, the Pro has features that only the hardcore users would want. 'Tis safer to have the boot than to see your system get the boot.

EscapeClose v1.1 [158k] W98/2k/XP FREE http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106818

EscapeClose is a tiny utility, that allows you to close the currently active window by pressing the Esc button. The program offers two working modes: one will move the mouse cursor over the X button of the current window - all you have to do is click, and the second mode will close the active window immediately. EscapeClose runs in the system tray. A handy utility, that will probably save busy computer users several miles of mouse traffic a day.

Explore2fs v1.00 Pre 5 [356k] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/explore2fs.htm

{Copy Linux transferred files into Windows} When Linus was first creating Linux, he used the Minix filesystem. This served initial development well, but there was a need for something better. In April 1992, the Extended File System was created. Although it solved the problems of Minix, it had problems of its own, and led to the creation of a successor. This new file system was known as the Second Extended File System, or Ext2FS (or EXT2). When you download files under Linux without copying them to your Windows OS drive, you may not want to switch back just to copy the files. Instead, use Explore2fs - an Explorer-like program - that allows you to save files from any Ext2fs partition. The program can read and interpret the Ext2fs files System. Note that there have been reports that, under Windows 95, Explore2fs has possibly caused partition table corruption. Although this has not been proven, just be aware of it. The program supports ext2 and ext3, drag and drop, and file and directory exporting / importing, to name just a few of its features. Be sure to read the notes specific to your Windows OS before proceeding.

ExplorerXP v1.0 [639K] Win2k/XP FREE  http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=107825

{File explorer} ExplorerXP is a small and compact file manager that allows you to view, edit, copy, move, rename, and delete files and folders using a drag-and-drop interface. Unlike the regular Windows Explorer, it displays the total size of each folder and allows you to browse multiple folders from a tabbed interface. It also includes an option to split and merge files, and to select or delete files based on wildcards.

EXEtract Images v1.0 [113k] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://ktk.ru/~camelot/exetractimages.htm

{Grab images from executables} Where was this tool when I was searching the 'Net over for an icon, a common one? It was Murphy's Law at its best. I see the icon all the time, yet when I needed it... it never appeared before me. I loaded this program, opened an executable file containing over 2000 images and icons, including the one I had spent too much time seeking. EXEtract can extract images from EXE, DLL, and OCX files. It's a no-frills program that allows you to search for files with one of these extensions, or look into folders. After the images are extracted, use the arrow key to go through them one by one and save any image in its native format. Now, you can access the individual image without opening or searching the executable file. The tiny images are hard to view, but "Zoom in and out" is included to give you a better view. Too bad it doesn't extract WBC files. I just happened to be trying to get an image of Garfield with coffee using a WBC extension to send to Paul to cheer him up after an all-nighter. Oh, I cheered him up, in other ways.

Fast Backup Fast Backup v1.3.0.0 [261K] Win9x/2k/XP FREE http://www.geocities.com/roy_saad/

Fast Backup is a free program that allows you to back up and restore files in Microsoft Windows. Specifically, you can use this program to back up files on a Win 95 machine and restore them under Windows XP. Over the years I've tried quite a few different backup programs. I was impressed immediately when I launched the software. The interface is very simple to use. I browsed for the files I wanted to back up, specified where to back them up, and the type of backup I wanted performed, and wham! Done. My files were backed up. The scripting capabilities also allow you to automate the whole backup process. This program is simple to use, the interface is very clean, and it definitely does the trick.

Fast Explorer v2.0.4.210 [562k] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://thesoftpro.tripod.com/downloads/fe/

{Context menu} Fast Explorer allows you to add and delete context menu items of a shell's file objects and virtual objects displaying in file manager. For instance, add a graphics program to Fast Explorer. When you see an image file, right-click on the file and select the graphics program you added with Fast Explorer and the file opens with the program. It can be handy when you have multiple programs that can handle the same file type, but you want to control which program opens the file. You can add menu items, submenus, and dividers. Associate menu items with any file type registered in the system, including three predefined file types: all files, all non-associated files, and all folders.

FileMap by BB v2.1 [110k] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106195

FileMap by BB lets you create an inventory list (snapshot) of the files in your Windows and System folders, so that you can do a comparison check later to determine what has been added or removed. This can be useful to find out what files have been added or removed during software installations or other system modifications. The program presents you with an easy to understand "before and after" list, based on the initial inventory (which can be updated at any time). Since the program compares the before and after inventory, there is no need to keep it running, unless you need it.

FileTargets v1.4.0 Windows Explorer is easy enough to use, but that doesn't mean you can't have too much of a good thing. FileTargets aims to simplify file moving and copying by letting you add context menus with your favorite file and folder names. Its menu is similar to the standard SendTo menu, but it also allows you to create subgroups, automatically add new folders, and copy file path names. File Type Manager v2.0.1 [2.6M] W98/2k/XP FREE http://www.csc.uvic.ca/~fworsley/ftm/

{Windows file types} Windows' file manager is a plain Jane, while File Type Manager is Wonder Woman for managing file types, shell extensions, and actions. It's intended for power users, since the program messes with the system and has consequences when making a change. Users can edit, view, add, remove, and find file types. The utility puts and orphaned file extension into its own folder. I reviewed the list of orphans and went to File Extensions to look up the extension and get details including program, company, MIME, file classification, notes, and related links. Power users can find many uses for this utility.

Freebyte Backup

is a freeware backup program for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP. It allows one to easily copy (and filter) a large number of files and directories from various sources into one backup directory.
It is possible to backup all files found in the specified set of input directories, or to have only certain file types copied. Files can be filtered according to file-extensions.
With the optional 'Incremental backup' feature, the program only copies files which have not yet been part of a backup. It is also possible to specify a date, so that only files changes/created after a certain date/time are copied, or to only copy files if they are more recent than the corresponding files at the target location.
Additionally, one can view a report which lists all the files; of each file one can see wether the files is copied or skipped, the file size, file date, source and target locations, total number of files copied, total number of bytes copied.
For each backup set, a different profile can be created specifying different input and output directories and filter settings.
Has command-line parameter for automatic and scheduled startup in combination with programs like Freebyte Task Scheduler.

HSLAB Shutdown Folder Lite v1.4.1.38 [1.9M] W98/2k/XP FREE http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106254

HSLAB Shutdown Folder is a utility that provides a service similar to the Windows Startup Folder, only that it performs actions when Windows is shutting down. It can launch applications, command files (*.bat,*.cmd), and symbolic links placed into the Shutdown Folder just before Windows shuts down. If there are items placed in the Shutdown Folder, the program intercepts the regular shutdown process, launches the executables or scripts and waits for them to finish - then continues with the regular shutdown. It's useful for executing backups, cleanups, or other maintenance operations on a regular basis. The actions can optionally be performed at LogOff as well.
