2 Find MP3 v8.0.8 [330K] Win9x/2k/XP FREE  http://www.npssoftware.com/2findmp3/index.htm

{Search Tool} Although I'm not one for downloading mp3s from the Internet, I do know a number of people who are accustomed to doing so and therefore I decided to check out a program called 2 Find MP3. This little program searches ordinary Web sites for the music you are looking for and displays the results. One of the nice things about this program is that it verifies each link so you can avoid broken downloads. Not only that: since the software doesn't use any peer-to-peer networks, you can download your favorite music without having to expose your hard drive to other users on the Internet.

Abander MP3 Image Extractor v1.0 [520k] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://www.softartstudio.com/tagcontrol/extract_images.htm

{MP3 tag viewer and image extractor} This tag viewer and image extractor supports ID3v1 tags, ID3v2 tags, and MPEG information. An ID3v1 tag is located in the last 128 bytes of an MP3 file, and holds the title, artist, album, comment, genre, year, and track number information. ID3v2 tags are located at the beginning of the file. For MPEG files, the program extracts bitrate, sample rate, and size information. Not only does it support MP3 files, but it also supports OGG, WMA, ASF, and APE. Using Abander, open a directory with MP3s and it immediately presents any information available in one of the four tabs (ID3v1, ID3v2, image, and MPEG Information). It's a simple and fast utility.

Access Violation Error Message When You Right-Click MP3 Files This Microsoft Knowledge Base Article highlights a fix for Windows XP computers that have Microsoft Plus! installed. It turns out that this combination of Windows XP and Plus! can cause you to get an "access violation" error whenever you right-click an MP3 file or group of files that contain an MP3 file. If you have this problem, then just follow this link and download the patch for your specific language. The patch is only about 100KB, and it replaces the acshell.dll file with a newer version. If you are like me, then you like quick and easy patches... and there is none easier then this one so don't hesitate. After all, the worst thing that could happen is that it can fix the problem, and I don't think that is a bad thing at all!

Audacity v0.98 [1.3M] W9x/2k/XP FREE Some folks like to listen to music. They turn on their stereo or MP3
player, sit back, and enjoy the sounds. Then, there are those people
who like to play around with, dig right into, and manipulate sound.

Audioactive StreamPlay v1.3 [950k] W9x/2k FREE http://www.audioactive.com/download/dnl_ovw.html

{Streaming player} From the Web site of your favorite radio station, you're listening to a great artist playing live in the studio. Suddenly... silence. Looking at your player, you see that little flashing red icon and the word "Rebuffering..." Don't you hate when that happens? Audioactive StreamPlay is a dedicated MP3 streaming player that's optimized for live audio streams and gets rid of those dead spots. The program comes with an onscreen data rate / buffer display. I may not have the best listening ears, but like everyone, I don't like silence in the middle of an audio file. There was no mention of compatibility with Windows XP, but since it works with 2000 and NT, I would bet it would be OK for XPers - in this case, forewarned is forearmed.

AudioCrusher

MP3s are all the rage, but how long will that continue? AudioCrusher lets you encode your CDs into any major format, including MP3, WAV, Ogg Vorbis, and WMA. This free CD-ripper can retrieve artist and title information from the Internet. It can, of course, also play your CDs and audio files. You can also select the bitrate and a channel mode (stereo, mono, etc.). Note that the only encoding formats built in to the software are RAW audio, WAV, and WMA. To encode your music in MP3 and other formats, you'll have to download and install the encoding engines, some of which are available at the vendor's website. SysDesk

AVIPreview v0.21 alpha [184k] W9x/2k/XP FREE http://www.avipreview.com/avipreview.htm

{AVI movie player} Instead of waiting for a large file to be completely downloaded (at a snail's pace), AVIPreview is capable of playing movies while they're in the process of downloading (not necessarily "immediately," as the author explains in the FAQ). It works with AVI, DivX, MPG, MPEG, and VideoCD. The creator's original intent for the program was for watching KaZaA *.dat files while they're loading. The program has been tested with P2P file sharing programs. AVIPreview can generate the index and play the file using one click, providing information on the length of the video. One note to Win98 users: try v0.20a (a few lines below the link to the newest version) if File | Open does not work in 0.21a, or try using only drag-'n-drop to download the file.

CalendarPainter [1.68M] Win98/2k/XP FREE http://go.lockergnome.com/444

For some reason, people really get into calendars. You may have even seen those mall kiosksClick here to enlarge! that have all different types of calendars. Wall, desk, and organizer calendars are everywhere. Maybe I should break into that business? OK, that thought's gone. Instead of buying regular calendars, have you ever thought about making your own? Some people like to do this because they can put pictures of their kids or pets (aren't they the same?) on the calendar. To get started in a simple way, check out CalendarPainter.

The software takes you through a six-step process to create your calendar. You can customize the colors, the orientation, and a host of other things. As you can imagine, CalendarPainter has support for Bitmap and JPEG graphics. The software is easy to understand, and leads you from the beginning to end in a nice way. However, I would like to see a little more calendar customization added in a future version. In the end, CalendarPainter allows you to keep track of each day in a more personal way. You heard me - things just got a lot more personal

CapturePad v0.1b [759K] W98/2k/XP FREE http://www.capturepad.com/

{Screen video capture} Capture the screen action and save it as a video file including .avi, .jpg, and .swf (Flash). Using a Webcam, I captured Zachary (the Snave newborn) two different ways: one by selecting the Window from the screen area and another by video source. I even added silly narration by turning on sound capture. Of course, while all this was happening, he was sound asleep and not moving an inch. Not only can you use it to capture video to send to family and friends, but also use it to create tutorials or step-by-step instructions. It easily captured my typing this report or an instant messenger conversation with Zachary's grandma. It's a great solution for those who want something easy and quick to use for accomplishing such tasks.

CDDA Ripper v0.65 [1.1M] W98/2k/XP FREE http://www.milix.net/cddarip/index.html

{Rip CD tracks} Featuring this program is not a hint that you should steal audio. Rather, use CDDA Ripper if you want to extract contents from your CD and encode them to PCM, WAV, MP3, WMA, or OGG Vorbis files for your PC. True, there are plenty of such programs from which to choose, and I don't recommend one over the other, especially since I'm no audio pro. CDDA Ripper offers CDDB and ID3 tag support, templates for track name generation, a built- in CD player, and the option to put an album into its own folder. The steps are easy enough. Start the program, assign a folder, insert the audio CD, press F5 to refresh, select the tracks you want, and press Ctrl + R. Yeah! If I can do it, you can, too.

ClearTweak Your monitor contributes a lot to your computing experience. One of the often-overlooked aspects of computing is how the text is displayed on the monitor. You probably have just accepted how it looks already, but things can be improved. A setting in Windows XP called ClearType allows you to tweak how your fonts are displayed. ClearTweak is a program that helps you to modify this setting to your liking.

It’s important to note that this program should primarily be used if you have an LCD display, because it could make things blurry on a CRT. All you have to do is select the font smoothing options that look good to you, and the settings will be applied to your system. I noticed a dramatic difference while I was playing around with this program. It’s amazing how different things can look with a few simple tweaks. Give it a try, and see what pleases your eyes

Cosmos 4D v1.000RC [11.9M] W98/2k/XP FREE http://users.hol.gr/~sternas/Cosmos4D/cosmos4d.htm

{3D multimedia authoring tool} This is not for anyone who wants to simply tinker with 3D. However, if you want to get serious about it, this is a free program and you wouldn't be throwing away money if you decided you didn't like it. Cosmos 4D is for creating animated 3D projects with 3D sounds. It can view 3D file types like 3DS and LWO, and save animated projects as an .avi file. Edit and save mesh objects and capture 3D scenes to a .bmp file. When the project is done, build an executable, screensaver, or even a full-screen presentation from the project.

CDex If you're looking for a totally free solution to CD ripping and MP3 encoding, CDex is a "must download." This excellent tool lets you save tracks as CD-quality .wav files, as well as use included encoding libraries to convert tracks into popular compressed formats such as .mp2, .mp3, and Ogg Vorbis. CDex also supports third-party encoders for .mp3, .wma, .vqf, and .aac files. One especially nice touch: CDex can extract just partial tracks from CDs. . . See authors website here.
