| The Proxomitron | In any given Web page, there may be code that can hamper your
enjoyment of the Web, compromise personal information, crash your browser, or just slow down your surfing. This tool filters the way your browser views HTML code and helps your browser block JavaScript, disable tables and background images, and replace banners with alternate graphics or text. It basically replaces the HTML of the page that you're viewing with alternate code. Use the included editor to alter the filters or create your own. | TransURL v1.1.0 [26k] W9x/2k/XP FREE | http://www.screaminet.com/~tswirsky/transurl.htm
{Translating garbled URLs} TransURL is a little utility that removes escape codes in Web addresses. Escape codes are three character codes beginning with % making the URL look trashy. It's annoying when you click on a link to arrive at a Web site with something like this in the address box: http://64.4.8.250/cgi- bin/linkrd?_lang=&lah=06a9b8d78f4c4dd1fc74161a7cad31da&lat=9612887 97&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2escreaminet%2ecom%2f%7etswirsky. Icky, isn't it? I wouldn't want to copy and paste such a URL to send to a friend or to save in a document. Furthermore, if you bookmark the item or add it to Favorites, the URL may not work. The small utility cleans the garbled link and provides the escape code-free result in the window. In this case, the mess becomes a nice clean http://www.screaminet.com/~tswirsky. This program is written specifically for Internet Explorer and tested with version 6.0. The author can't make promises how the program will behave with other browsers. Hey, it's free, why knock it? |

| Trillian | The lack of an instant-messaging standard can get frustrating
when you have friends that use different services. With this free application you can keep
in contact with your friends whether they use IRC, AOL, ICQ, MSN, or Yahoo. The
program retains features from each service, so you can search for buddies, set your status
as available or unavailable, change your passwords, and so on, without having to leave the
program. You can also change its look by downloading (or creating your own) skins. Author: Cerulean Studios | Version: 0.73 | File Size: 2379KB | Price: Free Operating System(s): Windows 9.x, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows NT |

| URLFixer v1.01 [349k] W9x/2k/XP FREE | http://www.geekcorp.com/urlfixer/ {Fix broken URLs} Select and copy a broken URL from an e-mail or Usenet article and double-click on the URLFixer icon in the system tray. Paste it in the e-mail or address box (or wherever it needs to go) and you'll see it whole again. This is especially helpful when long URLs are split. Instead of pasting the first part of the link into the browser and then returning to the e-mail to copy the second line and carefully add it at the end of the first, just double-click on the URLFixer icon and paste it into the browser. URLs can be shortened using Web sites like tinyurl.com, urlshortcut.com, and makeashorterlink.com. However, these are links you receive rather than send out. With fancy backend programming to automate a Web site's functionality, links are becoming more complicated than good ol' http://www.website.com/about/. Running URLFixer in the system tray takes about 728k of resources; definitely on the lower end compared to other system resources. |

| Visual URLEncode/Decode v1.0 [98k] W98/2k/XP FREE | http://www.techknight.com/ {Generate URL-encoded text} Visual URLEncode/Decode is a utility for generating and decoding URL-encoded text. It's a way of taking text filled with special characters and making it safe for transmission via a URL. For example, "Hello TK, how's it going?" becomes "Hello+TK%2c+how's+it+going%3f". All you have to do is enter text in the left panel and press the arrow button and the decoded text appears in the right panel. If it's already decoded, enter it in the right panel and its translation will appear in the left panel. Requires Windows installer and .NET runtimes, which are available from the site. |

| WatchThatPage | http://www.watchthatpage.com/ {Monitor Web pages} WatchThatPage offers various options for tracking Web pages and notifying you when they've been updated. To accomplish this, registration is required (otherwise it won't know your preferences). The service monitors any HTTP page except for those with HTTPS, SSL, and FTP. Web site owners can use the Web page notifier system to inform visitors of changes and track statistics. Updates are sent in an e-mail - or e-mails - on a recurring basis, depending on your settings. Another option is to see the changes in the e-mail or display only the URL of sites that changed. There's nothing to download; just register and enter the pages to track. This is not the only page-tracking service, but everyone has his or her own preference, and this is another option. |

| Webcam for MSN Messenger [552k] W98/2k/XP FREE | http://messenger.msn.com/support/webcam.asp
{Video instant messenging} How long have I been out? I passed out because I saw two unlikely words together on this site: "free" and "Microsoft." We at BLCOW smile for the camera - most of the time - so it's your chance to smile for the world using this download, which works with most any Web camera. The trick is that both sides of the conversation need to have MSN Messenger v5.0, a compatible Web cam, and this free software to use it. If you still had the old, cheap Web cam and plugged it in. In minutes, you will be having a videoconference / Web chat. |

| WebFerret | Use your Internet connection to check several popular search engines (Alta Vista, AOL NetFind, EuroSeek, Excite, GOTO, Infoseek, LookSmart, Lycos, and Yahoo) | ||||
| WebMap | Do you feel your Web searches are haphazard? This utility
organizes your surfing by presenting you with a graphical picture of the Web, showing
areas of a map with subjects such as Regional, Reference, Shopping, and Health. You can
click on the section and eventually "zoom" into the Web page that you're looking
for. You can also enter subjects into the search field, and icons will appear inside the
sections. Your favorites appear on the WebMap, as well as the most popular sites. There's
even a "Where am I?" icon. Author: WebMap Technologies | Version: beta | Price: Free Operating System(s): Windows 9.x, Windows 2000, Windows NT go to download site |

| Web Notepad v1.02 [931k] W9x/2k/XP FREE | http://www.digicraft.com.au/webnotepad/
{HTML editor} This one won me over just based on its icon alone, because it looks like a left-hander writing. OK, this is not a real reason to install a program. Hand coders who don't like to use WYSIWYGs when writing HTML will like this one, since it color codes the code and has FTP built-in for uploading the files to the server. It comes with tabs so you can have multiple documents loaded and switch between them by clicking on the tabs. It had no problems opening ASP, JSP, PHP, CSS, and TXT files. My only complaint is it doesn't wrap long lines of text; at least, not that I could find. Nifty program. |

| Web Nuke v1.1.0007 [760k] W98/2k/XP FREE | Smash pop ups and ads--Yeah, yeah, another
pop-up killer. We've heard from readers who love one and hate another. Finding the right
pop-up puncher is a matter of finding one that fits your 'Net style. If you use a browser
other than Internet Explorer, then this won't fit your style (since it only works with
Internet Explorer 5.01 and higher). Right-click on an image or a Web page and select
"Z WebNuke" to get a pop-up box. Select the URLs to nuke, and click "Nuke
'em." If the site or graphic continues to show up, completely close Internet Explorer
and try again. Note that it doesn't work with Flash-based ads. http://wwwnuker.tripod.com/webnuke/ |

| WebSpy | http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106599
WebSpy is a small tool that lets you find Web servers and automatically resolve their domain name (if any). | WinGet v1.0 [211k] W9x/2k/XP FREE | http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106105
WinGet is an easy-to-use and small download accelerator that speeds up your download time by splitting the file into multiple threads while downloading, thereby maximizing the potential of your Internet connection. The program can integrate with popular browsers and automatically take over the download for selected file types. WinGet is a good, basic download manager/accelerator. It lacks some advanced features and does not (yet) support cookies or authentication, so you could run into problems with some sites |
||||
| WinMX v3.1 | This file-sharing program lets you trade MP3 files, as well
as other types of video and picture files, with people via OpenNap servers. One of the biggest problems with similar OpenNap applications is trying to decide which servers to search on. WinMX solves that problem by automatically logging you on to a few. If you find others that you want to use, you can add those to your auto-log-on list later. The program can also track and resume broken transfers and shut down your computer after it has downloaded your chosen files. You can check the Hotlist to see when your favorite users are online. You can also configure the Share settings to establish which files you're willing to give to other users. Finally, WinMX offers a variety of chat rooms where you can talk to other music fans.
Even though the interface is clunky and not all that intuitive, once you learn how to use
WinMX, it gets the job done. Author: Frontcode Technologies | Version: 3.1 | File

| WipeOut v1.0.3.1 [645k] W9x/2k/XP FREE | http://securitysoftware.cc/apps.html {Wipe out cookies, Internet files, history, and all that jazz} There's no shortage of programs that clean cookies, Internet history, and temp files. WipeOut is another option that's geared to power users, but everyone can use its basic features. Under the Cookies tab, you can add cookies you want to keep so that you can clean out everything in the Cookies folder and keep only the good cookies. It can take a while to select all the valid cookies since we have too darn many, but they save login time. You can select and deselect the items to be deleted before the next big WipeOut. The securitysoftware.cc Web site has other utilities available for downloading that address the shutdown process, Task Manager, and network-related tools. |

| WinSock Repair Utilities: LSP-Fix Repairs Winsock 2 settings, caused by buggy or improperly-removed Internet software, that result in loss of Internet access LSP-Fix is a free utility to repair a specific type of problem associated with certain Internet software. This type of software is known as a Layered Service Provider or LSP, a piece of software that can be inserted into the Windows TCP/IP handler like a link in a chain. However, due to bugs in the LSP software or deletion of the software, this chain can get broken, rendering the user unable to access the Internet. LSP-Fix is not a malware removal utility and does not target specific products. LSP-Fix does not delete any files. Before Downloading, read this: Downloads: (All downloads will fit easily on a floppy disk.)
If you are using the program on a machine that cannot open .zip files, or are downloading for a friend whom you're not sure can read .zip files, download the uncompressed files below instead. It will take a bit longer, but this way the program can be used as-is (e.g. from a floppy disk). Some other Repair
Utilities: NOTE: these files are listed and as use at your own risk. Though most of these student utilities are pretty god, BLCOW has not reviewed them in any way shape or manner. they are offered here as part of a possible fix. These things can also be done by hand but if your expertise on computers is limited, these are the better effort than me explaining in detail, how to conduct a Winsock repair. |
