Recovering lost email messages in Netscape 7.2

In most cases, providing that the profile is not corrupted, the link execution to your inbox may broken. The fix may take some work on your part and, maybe even a little detective work.
Now then, if your not so lucky then it is possible that prefs.js gets wiped - all mail/news accounts settings lost or The prefs.js frequently truncated on exit or crash

The Profile Directory location is controlled by the Registry.dat file. In order to separate the Mozilla and Netscape profiles, you must have separate registry.dat files for each program. The registry.dat file location for Mozilla is set in the xpcom.dll file.
This hack is for Advanced Users, Only:
Quick hack to have Netscape 7 & Mozilla use separate Profile Directories:
Win32:
1. Do a "Find" for xpcom.dll and back up the Mozilla
xpcom.dll file
(Make a note of the file location.)
2. Make a copy of the xpcom.dll backup, and use this copy for the hexadecimal
editing
3. Open the xpcom.dll backup in your favorite hexadecimal editor
4. In the Edit | Find window, ensure that "Match case" is enabled, as
the Edit is case sensitive.
5. Search for the string "Mozilla". There are two instances of "Mozilla"
and should be replaced
(renamed) using only 7 (seven) characters.
6. Save the edited xpcom.dll file
7. Edit completed
Next:
Copy the edited xpcom.dll file to the appropriate Mozilla folder
location
It will overwrite the Original xpcom.dll file, so ensure that you still have a
backup of the unedited xpcom.dll file
Open Mozilla
Open Windows Explorer
Browse to the ~\Applicata Data Folder.
You will now see two Profile Folders, as follows:
Mozilla, which will contain the Netscape 7.xx Profile
Your renamed Folder, which will contain the Mozilla 1.xx Profile.
NOTE:
In the event you have no hexadecimal editor, I recommend Free Hex, Version 1.0.156. This small editor is more than adequate for most needs.

If you have done a reformat, partitioned your Hard Drive, replaced your Hard
drive, or are moving your Profile data to another PC which uses the same OS, you
can use this easy method to move your Mozilla or Netscape Profile backup into
the new install of Mozilla or Netscape. This is assuming that you have made a
backup of the entire Profiles folder beforehand, in anticipation of the
reformat, etc. If not then do that now, as this is the key to the easy move of
the Profiles Data. See this page for your Profiles
Folder Location
Install Netscape / Mozilla
The following steps are important:
Don't let Mozilla or Netscape launch once it is installed, and don't create a
new profile. Close any window that opens at this point. This is so no Profiles
Folder is created. You will copy the entire Profiles folder from your backup.
Next:
Copy the backup of the Profiles Folder and paste it into the Mozilla folder of
the new install
That should get Mozilla or Netscape up and running.
To prevent having the Profile Manager open each time you open Mozilla or
Netscape, right click on the Desktop Shortcut.
Select: Properties
Select: Shortcut
In the "Target" field add this command switch: -p yourprofilename
It will look similar to this, and note there is one trailing space after the
final quotation mark:
"C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\mozilla.exe" -p
yourprofilename -quiet
OR
"C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe" -p yourprofilename
-quiet
The -quiet disables the splash screen, of course, this is your choice
Backing up your Profile is essential in the event that Netscape, or your OS may
crash, causing the loss of Profile data. Backing up the entire Profiles Folder
is the recommended approach, if hard drive space is not an issue. The frequency
of backups would depend on the frequency of changes you make in your
Preferences, Bookmarks, Address Book, etc. If you make daily changes in your
Profile, then make daily backups, etc. Create a "Backup" Folder on
your HD for this purpose. Do not, however, back up the Cache Folder. Before
backing up your Profiles Folder, delete the entire Cache Folder. Netscape
rebuilds this Folder each time it is deleted.
There are two additions to backing up the entire Profiles Folder:
1. Export all Address Books as an LDIF file, and save it to
your "Backup" Folder.
2. If you share a Bookmarks File (bookmarks.html) between Profiles,
or between Netscape/Mozilla, then back it up also.
For the new user, "making a backup" is not a familiar term, and there is uncertainty in how it is accomplished. To back up the Profiles Folder, one would simply right click the Folder, select "Copy". Next, browse to the newly created "Backup" Folder, right click, and select "Paste". If HD space is an issue, but you have storage media such as a CD-RW, Zip drive, or only floppy disks, then you can back up the following specific data:
Mail:
To back up your mail messages, save the files without MSF extensions, for
example Inbox, Drafts, Templates, etc. Also save the rules.dat file. The *.msf
files are summary, or index files, and will be rebuilt automatically.
CAUTION: In the event you should have to replace your mail messages, they will replace any existing files in the new Mail folder. You may first want to rename the backup Mail files, e.g., change Inbox to OldInbox, etc. The renamed files will appear in the Netscape 7.0x Mail. This will ensure that you lose no existing mail.
News:
The subscribed groups are stored in the *.rc file (i.e. secnews.netscape.com.rc).
The complete news server groups list is stored in hostinfo.dat (e.g. \News\secnews.netscape.com\hostinfo.dat).
*.msf files store message summaries. To back up news, save the *.rc, and *.dat
files.
NOTE:
This is not always successful, and often it is necessary to resubscribe to your
Newsgroups.

Reusing these files could cause Netscape to either crash, or to malfunction.
On the Windows 95/98, or PC #1:

***If you are moving a Netscape 7.2 or a Mozilla 1.7.x or later Profile, then all that's necessary is to copy the Profiles folder to the Mozilla folder, replacing the existing Mozilla folder. There is a new feature in the Mozilla 1.7.x Releases which has support for relative paths for mail folders in prefs.js. This enables the user to copy profiles from PC to PC, etc., without having to edit the prefs.js.

I have been searching the web....I hope you can help me! My computer crashed, with Netscape 7.1 installed on it. The techs at Best Buy backed up my data (address book/bookmarks, etc) to a CD Rom. The files are saved with the .mab extension, and Netscape says it doesn't recognize the file type when I try to open them. Upon further reading, I'm not sure Best Buy used the import/export tool to save this files, and they definitely were not converted to .ldif files. Netscape 7.1 is now reloaded on my computer, but I sure would like to get all my old addresses and emails loaded.
Am I sunk here? or is there a way to move these files from the CD Rom into Netscape?

The *,MAB* file extension should be the addressbook for Netscape 7.1. It should work if the file is indeed the correct file and not just renamed from something else. Before following the tips below, close all instances of Netscape including the Quick Launch near the time clock on your desktop in the System Tray. Once the file is copied, simply log of and then log on again and open your addtressbook. The addresses should then be there.
Try copying the file from your CD to:
In Windows 9.x systems: C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt
In Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\YourID\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\YourProfileNumber.slt
NOTE: YourID stands for the profine that you used YourProfileNumber.slt is the profile you have used and may start with a b followed by some other numbers and letters. But, what your looking for is the *.SLT* folder.
The addressbook is a file called, "abook.mab".
Copy that file from the Cd to the selected folder.
Once the addressbook is back I suggest that you backup your complete Profiles Folder frequently, and export your Address Book as an LDIF file, just as a fail safe.
Corrupt, or Disappearing Netscape 7 / Mozilla Address Book
If the Address Book is corrupt for any reason, or disappears due to a crash, the
following procedures should allow you to retrieve the Address Book data:

It ain't easy, but there is a way to export the Netscape 6.0 pain in the backside
addressbook
I am amazed at the number of emails I have been getting lately concerning the desire to export the Netscape 6.0 address book. there is a way, but it ain't easy and updating to Netscape 7.1 is no garuntee either. But you really should update to Netscape 7.1 it is lightyears ahead of anything Netscape has done to date
Okay, here is what you need to do to get the Netscape Addressbook into a form which you can work with.
Netscape 6 does provide one roundabout way to export address book data. Address book
cards can be printed out. By installing the Generic printer with FILE: as the printer
port, you can generate a text file of the address book. To install the Generic printer
(that’s its name), click Start > Settings > Printers. Double-click on Add
Printer, Click on Next > Local Printer > Next, and select Generic from the list of
manufacturers. In the port selection screen choose FILE: as the port. In Windows 95 and
98, the Windows CD-ROM may have to be inserted to complete the process.
Printing the address book (select one entry with a single click, and then hit Ctrl-A to
select all) will bring up the Print to File dialogue box, requesting that you to save the
file as a *.prn file. The .prn file is a plain text file. Netscape 6 will generate a new
file for each card printed from the address book. These files can then be combined and
edited to produce a comma-delimited or .ldif address book file that can be imported by
Netscape Communicator or Outlook Express or saved to a floppy for later import into which
ever client you decide on. To combine all of the .prn files, use the DOS command
“COPY *.prn FILENAME”. This will concatenate all the *.prn files into a single
file. You may want to do this through DOS (start | Run (Windows Key + R) and type: COMMAND
in the 9.x kernel, or if you have Win XP through the DOS Emulation (Start | Run (Windows
Key + R) | type: CMD
Once done, rename the file from PRN to LDIF. they are both nothing more than text files.
Email programs seem to make a habit of burying mail in out-of-the-way folders, making it hard to locate if you ever want to back up the original mail folders manually, or if you simply want to know where your mail is being stored.
Why they don't stick it in a sub-folder of My Documents -- so users are likely to back up their email when they back up the rest of their documents -- is beyond me. Backing up email is often a bear anyway, because few programs automate the procedure, and so this obfuscation of the mail folders simply adds to the confusion.
Here's a quick guide to finding where your mail is stored.
In Mozilla and Netscape Mail, there's a neat shortcut you can use to discover the exact location of a particular mail folder:
For example, the path to my Inbox in Mozilla Mail is:
mailbox:/F\Documents and Settings\Dad\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\n00afwew.slt\Mail
Alternatively you can right click on the mail folder in Windows Explorer and choose properties, and you should receive, in my example it is: Simply drag your cursor over the file location and copy it to your clipboard. Open Notepad and paste it in. Now you have the full path to your mail folder. Are we having fun yet?

This bypasses the regular method of re-writing everything. To coin a phrase, "Set it, and forget it".
That's not in the usual form you see pathnames, but it's easy enough to derive the regular pathname -- just strip off the mailbox:/, replace the C| with C: , and make all the slashes into sloshes (backslashes for example: "/" becomes "\")..This, of course assumes that you placed the application in the defaults. As you can see by my example, I didn't. Call me a rebal but that's just the way I am.
Here's a quick way to open a mail folder on your computer:
C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Dad\l3xn4x9v.slt\Mail\pop.east.cox.net\
If you open the mail folder you'll find two files for every mail folder. For example, you'll find an Index file and an Index.msf file; a Trash and a Trash.msf; a Sent and a Sent.msf; and so on. The .msf files are indexes; your mail is stored in the other files, those without file extensions. If you ever do a manual backup, you only really need to copy the extension-less (Inbox not Inbox.msf) files because the .msf files get re-built automatically, although you may find it easier to copy the entire contents of your mail folder anyway. If you have any nested mail folders (for example, Work\Read Later and Work\Done) you'll find a sub-folder with an .sbd extension with the mail files contained within that. In this example, there'd be a sub-folder called Work.sbd containing four files: Read Later, Read Later.msf, Done and Done.msf.
Feeling really brave? Simply copy the contents of the local folders into your backup. If something goes a rye, simply copy the saved backup, back into the original folder and, viola, your messages are back where they belong.
In Outlook Express, right-click a folder and choose Properties from the pop-up menu to see the storage location. In the Properties dialog the folder location is displayed under This Folder Is Stored In The Following File. Chances are the folder name will be truncated, due to shoddy design on Microsoft's part. And, because it's greyed out, you may think there's no way of displaying the whole thing. But you can: Just click anywhere in the folder path and use the right-arrow key to scroll through it. If you want to grab the whole path, click and drag all the way across the folder path to highlight it, press Ctrl+V to copy it to the clipboard, and then paste it into a document.
Outlook Express stores my Inbox in an even more outlandishly out-of-the-way place than Mozilla:
C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\Application Data\Identities\{742DC712-BE9D-4EF7-BA65-C0041FC3121A}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Inbox.dbx

Outlook stores all your mail in a single .pst file (if you're using POP3 email and not Exchange Server), instead of using individual files for each mail folder. In fact, Outlook sticks everything into that .pst file: Mail, contacts, calendar entries, and so on. To locate the .pst file, by default called Outlook.pst:
If you install Eudora to the default location, you'll find the mail files in the C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora folder. Eudora creates two files for each mail folder, the mail store has the extension .mbx and the index has the extension .toc.
Pegasus creates a folder for each user within C:\Program Files\PMAIL\MAIL (provided you installed the program to the default location). To check the location for the current user:
Pegasus has a particularly intricate system of storing messages, mail, folders and all the other stuff it keeps (if you want to sort out what all those files are in your PMAIL\MAIL folder, check out this item from the Pegasus Knowledgebase. If you ever want to back up your Pegasus mail, grab the whole folder.
Lost emails when upgrading from Netscape 7.0 to Netscape 7.1

Possible Answer: I am going to assume that you are talking about an
upgrade from 7.0 to 7.1.

If you are using Windows 98, go to the location of the profile (Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Yourname\**********.slt) and find the old profile name you were using prior to installing 7.1. There will be a INBOX folder that should have all your saved email. Keep in mind that the INBOX folder you are looking for is NOT the one with the .msf extension. You can delete those. You should be able to copy and paste the inbox contents to your new profile inbox. If you installed 7.1 in its own directory, you can do the same thing and transfer the inbox contents to the new profile inbox. Installing 7.1 in its own directory is the better way to upgrade Netscape

I have had very little questions concerning this issue with Netscape 7.1 unlike older versions. I suppose there is a first time for everything. Hope this helps you to solve the mystery. I would be interested to know if any of the above suggestions solved the problem. though you are the first to complain about this in NS 7.1, it has been my experience you won't be the last.
Importing backup Netscape 6.2 Messenger files to Netscape 7.1

Before I did that I transferred my Email Users Folders to Exterior Hard Drive which I recently purchased. Now I have installed Netscape 7.1. I am trying to import these folders to Netscape 7.1 on C Drive. Unable to do it. Can you help me?
Sure Ajit, try this:
Mail folders are text based files. You can copy them as you would any files. They can be
opened with a text editor, which will display all messages, one after the other. The
default path to the directory which contains your mail folder should be:
Netscape 6, Netscape 7
C:\...\Mozilla\Profiles\profile_name\salted_name\Mail\each_mail_account
(Note: the location of Netscape 6 or 7
profile location is different by platform,

Ignore files with an .snm
extension; they are built as needed. Copy only the files that have no extension, such as
INBOX. If you have subfolders, copy all files (except .snm extension) under subfolders.
If you ever need to view those files in Messenger, they can be copied back to the MAIL
directory. However, rename them first to avoid overwriting an existing folder (file) of
the same name. For example, rename INBOX to OLDINBOX so the current INBOX folder isn't
overwritten. Create a folder in Messenger for messages you want to save. Copy that folder
to the back up.
Path Profile Locations:
Netscape 6/7 Profile Location
By default, Netscape profiles are stored in different places on different platforms. Users
may also choose a directory (or folder) in which to store their profile data.
For Netscape 6 and 7, the default profile and registry storage are stored in the
directories (or called folders) are shown in the table below. Paths to the Mozilla
directory vary among platforms.
The mozilla directory always contains the following:
* The profile registry (name varies among platforms)
* A directory called Profiles
The Profiles directory contains one or more directories whose names correspond to Netscape
profiles (shown as profile_name in table below).
Each of these directories includes another directory whose name is composed of random
numbers and letters (shown as salted_name (*****.slt) in table below). (side issue: why
use random numbers and letters?)
For Windows platforms, your Windows login name is referred as user_name.
Important: The directory Application Data may be hidden on some Windows platforms (such as
Windows 2000 and XP). If this is the case, the user should follow these steps to see it:
1. Open the View menu for the Mozilla directory and choose Options.
2. Click the View tab.
3. Under Hidden Options, click "Show all files".

Can not get Netscape 7.1 to start after several installs and uninstalls
Question: I recently had to re-partitianed and reformat my drive. I have a copy of Netscape 7.1 and installed it. When I clicked on the Netscape icon after rebooting, it wouldn't start. I have tried everything I could think of. I went to add remove programs, deleted Netscape. rebooted, installed, tried again, same thing, nada. Went to Add/Remove programs and deleted the software again. Rebooted, went to C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla. Deleted that folder. Went to the Programs folder and manually deleted everything I could find that pertains to Netscape. Then went to the Registry and searched and deleted everything that I could find on Netscape.
Rebooted, tried to install NS 7.1 again and the same blasted thing. How on earth does anyone get this thing to work?

Answer: Well Judd, I feel your pain. One would think that you have done everything that could possible be done. Not entirely true. There is more:

Question: I' ve been searching for the answer to this one: Upgraded to Netscape 7.1 smoothly and everything is operational EXCEPT a majority of the web pages do not load gifs and jpgs. If I right click on the area where the image should be to view, I can get an image in a new window. I set preferences to use Netscape as the default for jpgs and gifs. I also updated my Java. I sure hope you can figure this one out!
Forgot, after I right click to view the image and return to the web page, I can then see the image.
Answer: Ah, this is excellent. In most of these types of cases simply increasing your browser cache is enough to resolve this problem.

How to set preferences for images. To view the preference settings for images:
1. Open the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
2. Under the Privacy & Security category, click Images. (If no sub categories are
visible, double-click Privacy & Security to expand the list. then click on images)
This may be the problem, at least, lets hope it is. Your browser should have this type of
setting. If not, change them to
Accept All Images. see below for explanation.
Image Acceptance Policy details below:
Image Acceptance preferences allow you to control whether and where Navigator displays
images:
Your choices under this section are:
* Do not load any images: Select this option if you do not want Navigator
to display images.
* Accept all images: Select this option if you want Navigator to display
all images. (This option is selected by default.)
* Do not load remote images in Mail & Newsgroups messages: Select
this check box if you want to avoid downloading images embedded in web pages sent as
message attachments. (This check box is selected by default.)
Is the appropriate HTTP protocol set up?
Make sure that your browser is using the 1.1 version of the HTTP standards. You will find
it under
Edit | Preferences | Advanced | HTTP Networking.
I do not advise on enabling the faster load times as established in the Pipeling section.
Very few web sites take advantage of this new protocol and it could have unknown
consequences.
Scripts and Plugins most likely not your problem
I am going to assume that you were able to view the image in the first email. Correct? If
you did then it isn't a problem with the scripts and plugins section
(Edit | Preferences | Advanced header | Scripts and plugins)
No harm in checking it to cover all of our bases though. If change images is not checked,
place a check mark for it.
On a side note: If you did enable the JPG format under
Edit | Preferences | Advanced | System, you may want to consider unchecking them. This
action sets Netscape as your default JPEG image viewer and associates Netscape with that
extension. If you have another image viewer which you use, double clicking on a JPG image
will not open the image viewer you have been using, it will open Netscape. I seriously
doubt that this is the reason that your browser isn't showing pictures and in fact, it may
cause you some grief later on. Especially if you remove Netscape from the system. The
image association will remain behind, but you will not have a program associated with your
JPG images any longer..
Check with your ISP
If all of this fails, may I suggest that you contact your local ISP's Tech Support. Tell
them what is going on. Maybe their server is set up with some strange form of
configuration at best or at least, they can suggest different settings to use to suite
their operation.

It's 3:13 a.m. and I am so happy to report that everything appears to be working. I must have had a corrupt reg file. After uninstalling Netscape I did a regedit and manually deleted all occurrences of Netscape. Did a clean reinstall and all is fine in the world again. Now I can rest in peace again.

Answer: To remove plug-ins from Navigator or Communicator on Windows 95/98 or NT, first check the Add/Remove Control Panel and see if the plug-in has a deinstaller. Windows 3.1x users should see if they have a program group for the plug-in that has a deinstaller for it.
If none exist, open Navigator/Communicator and from the Help menu, select About Plug-ins. Here you will see a list of all the plug-ins that you have installed. The information will look something like this: Plug-ins for Netscape 7.x can be found in C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Pugins by default. Subsitute your drive letter for C:\> if you have installed Netscape in another folder.

Macintosh users need to open their hard drive | Netscape Navigator (or Communicator) | Plug-ins and move any plug-ins that are in the folder to a different folder. This will remove most plug-ins; others may require further configuration within the associated program.

hope you continue to find the site useful.
One thing must be
said at the beginning, both Netscape 7.0 and 7.02 do have the mail and address exporter.
The simplest thing to do is to download and install version 7.0 or 7.02 and use its
exporter to make your extension changes.
That being said,
there are ways to export the mail and address book with the older version of 6.22. This is
a sledgehammer pounding a flea approach, but you can open the .ldif files in Excel and add
the Outlook specified header names to the columns and then save the doc as a .csv file so
Outlook would read it. Outlook added an inexplicable space to the end of the e-mail
address in the e-mail address line in the Contact's card. In order to correct this problem
you need to edit each and every email address, this is very tedious.
As for third party
software to accomplish this task, I am not aware of any. This, of course, doesn't mean
there isn't something out there. It simply means I don't know of any off the top of my
head.
I realize that these answers aren't exactly what you were hoping for and for that I am sorry. Netscape 6.x series was, to put it mildly, a huge pain in the backside.
Note: Some items below may or may not apply to you. I simply include them to cover all bases. Good luck.

You are suggesting I upgrade my 6.22 netscape to the 7.x
series;
Import my datafiles
(address book and e-mail messages) using the resident 7.x utilities;
Then use the 7.x export utilities

The Method:
Upgrading would be the simplest thing for you to do. There still may be problems however. Below is a suggested method once you have downloaded and install Netscape 7.0. You should be aware that I rarely use, or instruct on Outlook XP (2002). Reason? I do not like Office XP in any of its forms. If I had a preference it would be Office 97 or better yet Office 2000.
Moving your address book entries
from Netscape to your Outlook contacts folder: Note: Distribution lists (groups of email addresses) do not import
properly in to Outlook. After the import, you will need to re-add email addresses to your
distribution lists.

then click the Open button.
Note: Mail transferred in this way goes in to the mailbox on the server and counts against your quota. This of course assumes that you are using a server based contacts list.
Authenticating through the Exchange service
Note: You may not be able to utilize the Exchange service off site (through
dial-up). I include this only as an instruction in the broadest of terms. Authenticating
your exchange server is something normally done by the administrator. This may, or may not
be part of your job description.
1. On the desktop, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2. Double-click on the Mail icon. (If you do not see a Mail icon, click on Switch to
Classic View.)
3. Click on Email Accounts....
4. Under Email, select Add a new email account, and click Next.
5. Select Microsoft Exchange Server, and click Next.
6. Set the Microsoft Exchange Server to whatever mail server you are currently on, and set
the User Name to your Global ID (example: smith1j).
7. Click Check Name.
8. You may then be asked to input your User Name, Password, and Domain. The User Name is
your Global ID. The Password is your NT Password. Set the Domain to central. Click OK.
9. Your name will return underlined to show that your Exchange account has been located.
10. Click Next, click Finish, and click Close.
11. Outlook passes through your Active directory (CENTRAL) account and password, so
entering a password is not necessary.
Configuring Outlook (2002) to Query LDAP is something you may, or may not need, depending on how your work server is set up. I include it only as an instruction. Generally this is something that will be handled by your administrator.

1. Select Tools > Services.
2. Click Add. Select Microsoft LDAP Directory. Click OK. At this point, it may be necessary to insert the Office installation CD.

* Server Hostname: directory.<Your Account for example Chris.edu>

If you want Outlook to query LDAP when sending email:

4. Select File > Exit.
5. Log off your machine, then log back on.
Aanswer: In past versions (Up to NS 6.2) this could be achieved by
opening Netscape.cfg
(C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape6\Netscape.cfg)
in Windows Notepad and looking for the line
"profile.Mgr.security.allowPassword" that defaulted to "false",
not allowing passwords to be added/changed in Profile Manager. Setting it to
"true" in Netscape.cfg allowed that.Unfortunately this is not present in NS 7
nor in 7.02.
Currently Netscape/Mozilla does not encrypt profile data, so your
best bet would be restricting read and write access to your profile directory through your
operating system's file system facilities. Pain in the backside? Yeah it is. Netscape has version
7.02 available at present. You can find it here:

I haven't, as yet, had a chance to view this newer version but from what I have observed,
there isn't that much in the way of profile management in the 7.02 version, no more than
there was in the 7.0 version. Below are some suggestions for profile security but they
belong more to the operating system then they do for Netscape itself.

An Option
Even if you put a password on your Mac, Windows95, Windows 3.1, or Windows NT installed on
FAT partition, anyone who is able to access your hard drive will be able to open your
profile. On these systems a password protected screen saver may be your only option,
although it is possible to bypass it.
On Windows NT using a NTFS file system you can explicitly protect your profile:
1. Locate your folder in the
2. Right click on the folder that holds your profile.
3. Pick Properties.
4. Click on the security tab.
5. Hit the permissions button.
6. Hit the add button, then show users. Highlight your computer account name, then
hit add. You might also want to set the type of access to full.
7. You are done. The permissions box should now list System and your login name.
This will prevent even system administrators from casually accessing your profile, but they might be able to override your security if necessary. Your profile name will still be listed in the profile manager but access will be denied to any user account except your own.
Another Options:
If you have Win 2K, NT, or XP you need to create a user account for each profile, and
then for each user
profile set the file/folder permissions so that only you have access to it.
Sorry I can not be of more help, but we can only do what the software will allow us to do and profile options are very limited. The newest versions of Netscape, and Mozilla for that matter, are not as open source as some would have you believe.

First I have to ask the obvious. Have you enabled Netscape 7.0 as your default browser?
Win XP SP-1 Has Problems of it's Own
I would ask if you have downloaded and installed the Windows update, Windows XP Service Pack 1 (XP SP-1), but have found several flaws within this update and am advising anyone who will listen not to install this update. Why? Because it has some oddities which I am not able to put my finger on. While it is supposed to address the very issues you are talking about and in all fairness, it does address them, it also seems to launch applications and then not remove them thought the common stack or heap dumps. Geek speak for it starts programs and won't let go to the point of drowning the processor of the infected machine so that it gains up to 100% CPU (Central Processing Unit) usage and slows to a standstill. I am still studying this phenomena and hope to find the reason for it. The fact that it isn't an isolated incident, many of my readers are telling me they suffer the affect after installing the update, makes me question Microsoft's intention behind this behavior. This is made all the more intolerable when my usual contacts at Microsoft, are mum on the subject. This indicates, at least to me, of orders from higher up on the Microsoft food chain, to be silent.
Okay, now that I have vented, lets see what we can determine about your NS 7.0 settings and Windows Xpect Pain.
Fortunatly, Windows XP has more user pro-active programs to cipher through these problems. In Windows 98 and Me, it would be necessary to make a Registry Edit in order to perform this task.
The trick is to open the services dialog. Setting MSIE to "always dial" only helps MS programs. Third-party programs (Like Netscape 7, Opera 6, and Mozilla) do not use the hidden hooks that MS programs are given. Copyright laws being what they are I am assuming that AOL/Time Warner, can't get the proper initiator codec.
You need start services. Here is how:
1. Right-click My Computer,
2. Select Manage, and then expand Services and Applications,
3. Select Services
4. Scroll down until you see an entry called Remote Access Auto Connection Manager.
5. Right-click it, select properties.
6. Where you see Manual (as drop-down menu), change it to Automatic.
7. Select OK (you can also start the service first) and
8. Reboot to let the OS get this setting through its thick head. (Lock it into the System
Registry)
When you reboot, you should be able to have any non-MS program automatically dial out.
There are also a few more settings that have to be made in the dial-out window (that pop up when you want to access the Internet... you need to deselect, "Ask me before connecting", on one of the sub-windows), but you should be able to have Netscape 7.0 auto-dial now. I have suggested this fix successfully on several reader's XP computers so far.

A. The Character Coding menu cannot correct the thread pane display of non-MIME encoded headers. If the message displayed lacks MIME charset information, the thread pane display obeys the default message display charset set in the Preferences dialog box under "Mail & Newsgroups | Message Display | Languages". Correctly setting this option to the charset most often used in the user's mail viewing helps avoid display problem of this type.
Netscape 6.2.2 keeps locking up when it loads the Java Console
Q. I am not sure, it may depend on the Java version I
experience, primarily, lock ups on exiting NS6.2.2.When,6.2.2 is started, the Java icon
appears in the taskbar, and it disappear, as Netscape is closed. I found out that it was
not always disappear. So, I went to check the properties of the plugin in the Control
Panel. First possible problem was that I had four Java icons there, from
1.3.1,1.3.1_1,1.3.1_2 and the newly downloaded.
A. A new Netscape version and a bunch of new bugs and problems. Will it ever end? We can only hope.
First things first. In control panel select the newest version of Java Plug-In (1.3.1_02) double click on it to open it. The Java Plug-in Control Panel will open. On the Advanced tab be sure that Java 1.3.1_02 is selected in the Java Runtime environment is selected.
Secondly; Go to the Java
Website and download Java[tm] 2 Standard Edition, version 1.4 section
Install it and try NS 6.2.2 again. If it still locks up, return to the control panel and
double click on the 1.4 version again. Be sure that the Java Plug-in 1.4 is installed as
the default plug-in. If it isn't set to be so and try NS 6.2.2 once again. This should
have taken care of the problem. Visit the

.Once it is installed, be sure that it is the default Java console and try your Netscape 6.2.2 browser again. This should fix the problem, however, there are other bugs which NS needs to address. Q. A new install of Netscape 6.2.2 doesn't display the option to create a new account.
A. In Windows Explorer navigate to:

Delete *activation.dll* , You do not need to activate.

Recovering Lost Email Messages in Netscape 6.2.1
Q. I've got the following problem - I've recently installed NS 6.2.1, and for two times it crashed during downloading new e-mails. The results in both cases are that the MSF files were damaged, and I cannot see the messages, even though they are in the INBOX file. Of course, I can read it in the INBOX with a text reader, but it is very confusing that all messages are gone (and I had more than a thousand in my INBOX, some of them very important). Do you have any idea how can I fix this, converting the INBOX file or something similar.
A. First the good news. I have it on good authority (fly on the wall) that these types of problems are going to be addressed in the next NS release. Netscape 6.x versions, collect them all, impress your friends.
Now for your problem:
Using Windows Explorer, (Explorer.exe) go into your profile folder [1].
Usually it can be found in:
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla
There, you should find the mail | mail server folder delete all *.msf files.
Since we have so many people using so many different operating systems (all of which have different names for the folders in their paths), probably the easiest way to address this *.msf* issue is to click on Start / Find / Files or Folders and enter *.msf and all drives. The *.msf files can then be deleted in the resultant search window, with no need to know or memorize the specific path.
This should solve the problem. Relegating the *.msf* files to the recycle bin will allow you to recover them if something should go amiss. Be sure to delete any files in the recycle bin you do not believe you will need to restore before sending the *.msf* files into it. This will ensure that you will have enough disk space to recover them if necessary. You really shouldn't have to recover them but I always choose to do things on the side of caution.
Transfering NS 6.2.1 mail files back to NS 4.x
Q. After I installed 6.2, crashed repeatedly and gave up in disgust, I downloaded 4.7. Problem is, the import utility only works moving files from an older version to an upgrade, and not in reverse. How do I get my mail out of 6.2 to 4.7? Tried moving the mail.xpt file manually, but nothing happened
A. No need for an import utility since they use the same mailbox format. Copy the mail files from your 6.x profiles mail folder (files with no extension i.e. inbox, sent, etc.) to the corresponding 4.x mail folder. No need to copy the .msf entries since this is the 6.x version of the 4.x .snm files. These will be recreated by the software as needed.
Changing the Profile Path in NS 6.2.1
Q. i'm not very happy to find the netscape profile in my wnt-profile.THe most silly thing ist the randomizes directory path \mozilla\profiles\<profilname>\"random dir"\...). Has anyone an idea, how i can change the profile path away from then wnt-profile-directory , ie. to c:\netscape\...
Info: The randomizing of the profile directory is by design and is done to protect it against a malicious user finding out what the user profile is and finding it's directory is. This makes it difficult for a malicious person to cause unknown havoc. Why would anyone want to mess with a coworkers profile? You would need to ask the one messing with the files. Is this randomizing really a smart idea? Not in my humble opinion.
A. Safest way: Create a new profile with the profile manager and explicitly set the new directory. Then migrate your old data toi the new profile.
Netscape mail wiped out my inbox messages
Open NS6 Mail, choose a folder other than Inbox and let it load, then go back to inbox (note number of messages), close NS6. Repeat several times, each time the number of messages in the inbox should grow until they are all accounted for. It wouldn't hurt, at this point, to make a copy of the entire user folder in a safe place.
If you are still having problems, delete the inbox.msf in the mozilla user folder, and try again.

Saved username/passwords list:
Your saved usernames/password list for websites is stored in 12345678.s - the number part
is random. Save the file. Once you reinstalled everything and created a new profile, let
the new profile create a new *.s file by going to a website and saving username/password.
The new *.s file might be named "12345687.s". Delete that file and rename the
old 12345678.s to 12345687.s to have your old list back.
User.js/userContent.css/userChrome.css:
Save your valuable customization files!
user.js is directly in your profile folder. userContent.css/userChrome.css in the \chrome\
subfolder.
prefs.js:
The main Netscape/Mozilla configuration file. If you are certain that the new profile will
look exactly the same, save this file as well and copy it back once you created a new
profile to have all settings back.
Transfering Address Book from 4.x to 6.x
In NS 4.x, open the address book and choose file | Export. Choose to export messages to LDIF format.
Start the address book in Netscape 6.x Tasks | Addressbook and select File | Import | From Textfile which is the LDIF file from 4.xx

A. Sure, try this:
1) Close Netscape completely, and then click on Start / Find / Files or Folders
2) Enter *.msf and all drives in the two windows and click on the Find Now button
3) Write down the path to your "lost" mail folders
4) Restart Netscape
5) Click on your primary Mail account
6) Click on View settings for this account
7) Click on Server settings
8) Verify that the path in the Local directory box is the same as the one you wrote down. If it isn't then edit it to match.
That should solve it for you

PROBLEM: You remember seeing a particular Web page while you were surfing earlier, but you can't remember the URL or exactly when you saw it.
SOLUTION: Use your browser's built-in History feature. In Netscape Navigator, press Ctrl+H to call up the History window. It shows a chronological listing of every page you've visited, starting with the most recent and moving backward. Access the History feature in Internet Explorer by clicking on the History icon on the toolbar (the sundial). IE does not do nearly as well as Navigator in providing a history trail. Pages are grouped under the single sites and are displayed by the current week's days, then last week, two weeks ago, and three weeks ago. A. Basically it's a known bug but will be fixed in Netscape release version 6.5

Q. I uninstalled Netscape 6.01 and went back to Netscape 4.76. Now I get printing error messages when I try to print a webpage. The error states: "Alert! did not find a converter or decoder Content type text/shtmll" I click on OK to close the Dialog Box. The Window, then states:, "There are no pages to print." Again click OK to close dialog box. What's up with this?
A. Simply put, their webserver is screwed up for
the MIME Type "text/shtml" The MIME Type they have configured is
"text/shtmll" which is simply a typo, note the shtmll, should be only shtml
...One to many l's.
IE does not handle MIME, therefore it works just fine and ignores the typo.

There sure is see below:
Netscape 6.x as it stands, comes with only the bare minimum of file associations. The rest must be recorded in the preferences dialog and thus into the system Registry. This is for Netscape versions 6.0 and 6.01. Netscape 6.5 should have resolved may of these problems. At least, let us hope this is the case.
To manually configure Netscape 6.x to Recognize Windows Media Files:
1. Start Netscape 6
2. Click the Edit Menu and choose Preferences
3. Select "Helper Applications" category.
4. Click New Type
Note: This next step is a must do for any
chance of success.
In The New Type dialog box, enter the fallowing Description of Type: WindowsMedia File
File Extensions: .asf, .asx MIME Type: video/x-ms-asf
5. Click Choose and Locate mplayer2 (by Default, C:\Program Files\Windows
MediaPlayer\mplayer2.exe )
6. Click OK
7.Close all open dialog boxes, save your work and then reboot your system.
8. After rebooting, Launch Netscape. Click "Edit Menu" and choose
Preferences.
9. Select "Helper applications" Category.
10. Click video/x-ms-asf
11. Click Edit.
12: Click to clear the "X" mark on "Ask me before opening downloaded files
of this type"
13. Click OK, close preferences window.
This method can be applied to many file formats. You must know MIME types, file extension,
and, of course, Application to open paths..

A. Move all important mail out of your INBOX to another folder. Close 6.x and locate your /mail/ folder in c:\windows\application data\mozilla\users50\your_profile\xxxxx.slt\mail

The problem occurs if - the user is on Win9x (including Windows ME) - They had IM in 6.0 and upgrade it to 6.01 - they restart the browser before rebooting On Win9x users must reboot to complete an installation when files are in-use, as is the case when you self-upgrade the browser.
When users with IM re-start in the partial install state they will most likely crash in IMGLUE.dll, and bogus information is written into the IM registry. Rebooting to complete the installation will fix the crash, but the corrupted registry remains and will prevent the user (including new profiles) from logging into IM.
This can be fixed by deleting "Xpcs Registry.dat" -- this is perfectly safe to do and the file will be rebuilt on next launch. In fact the upgrade does delete that file, but in this situation it is rebuilt in a corrupted state.
Q. My History foleders don't work even when I set them for 7 days, 1week etc. How do I fix this?
A. Close 6.x and locate your profile directory in /Users50/<username>/xxxxxx.slt/ and delete the files HISTORY.DAT and HISTORY.MAB .. and NETSCAPE.HST (if there). The /Users50/ directory is in C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\
Where your Users50 folder is depends on your windows setup. If it's not in your Netscape directory with the Users folder, then it's in one of 2 places. \Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Users50\ or \Windows\Profiles\yourWindowsUserName\Application Data\Mozilla\Users50\
Q) I can't access the newsgroups on secnews.netscape.com
A) While in Mail/News, highlight the Netscape server profile you created, and then go to Edit -> Mail/News Account Settings. Click on the Server category under the server name (in the left pane). Check the box for "Use secure connection (SSL)" and set the port to be 563. Click the [OK] button and try subscribing to newsgroups again. They should appear now.

There are several ways to go about this, but the easiest way is to use a new tool for this specific purpose. To get it go to:

Q. Can't change font size in News reader. Is there a way to fix this?
A. Not quite "up to snuff" yet but try:
Edit / Prefs / Appearance / Fonts
Select a new "serif" and "sans serif" font and a font size for each one.
Then, check the box "Always use my font settings ...." .. Not quite fully functional yet but does work somewhat. Hopefully this will be fixed in the next release NS 6.5.
Q. I can no longer
get my webmail, I used the Account Wizard but get this message:
LOGIN FAILED message. Are the settings: <username>.imap.mail.netcenter.com
Port: 143 SSL correct?
A. SSL should NOT be checked. Also, did you install AIM when you installed 6.01? If not, you will need to do so as it a requirement if you wish to check your webmail from within Messenger in 6.x.
DO NOT mess with the default settings. You have to create the account
with
the New Account Wizard, specify it as a Netcenter account, and then leave it
alone.
Q. In the Newsreader I get
this error message :

A. It is not a good idea to get all the messages,something will give,if you do that,and it did.I select to download a certain number of messages,like 100.You can always get more.

A. You need to tell Netscape 6 where to save your sent mail, drafts, templates, etc. Edit/Mail-News Account Settings/Copies and Folders.
Q I've installed 6.01 4 times since friday can't get it to start,it freezes up on start up both mail and navigator
A I'm not saying this should have to be done for normal programs but
if you want to try and get N6 running try it.
Uninstall N6. Scan disk and then defrag. Reboot so everything is nice and
clean. Try and closeout a few programs you have in systray or running in the

Reboot again. Scan disk and then defrag again before starting N6. Once again,
try and close some programs you may have running in the background also. Try and start N6

A That is true. Netscape 6.01 doesn't uninstall the runtime. Java runtime does not uninstall automatically. To uninstall the JRE: Windows / ControlPanel | Add/Remove Programs / Java Runtime ....
Q Cannot Drag-and-Drop URLs (Links) Into
Netscape Browser Window from Other Windows Programs: For example, I use Outlook
Express 5.5 for e-mail; clicking on links in OE causes the link to be opened in IE 5.5, no
matter how the File Type setting is configured. However, I am able to drag links
from OE to Netscape 4.76 browser window, causing Netscape 4.76 to open the
dragged-and-dropped link. But, dragging-and-dropping a link to the Netscape 6.01
browser window does not cause the Web page to be opened.
A Activate the Bookmarks tab in your side bar and you can dra 'n' drop
the url to whatever place you want. One problem the link will take on the name of the URL.
You can change that by choosing "properties" and change the name.
6.01 is a very MINOR maintenance release. The MAJOR fix release
will be 6.5 ....

1. Q History doesn't work in the
Netscape 6.0. Why?
A History is automatically disabled in NS 6.0. Don't ask why, it
just is. You can reenable
it through adding a date in your Preferences, but you cannot individually clear items out
of
history (fixed as of Moz0.7). Links will show up as visited however (assuming the
page
designer intended for there to be a difference between visited/unvisited links)
On a side note. This feature does work in
the new release, 6.01, by clicking on the down arrow on the back and forward buttons. This
is similar to what MSIE had in the old 4.x days.
2. Q How come I can't right click and let go of the button to do
anything?
A Right-clicking is a bug in NS6, and does not work. Fixed as of
Moz0.7
On a side note: It doesn't work in the 6.01
release either. You can still use it by right clicking and using the arrow keys on your
keyboard to navigate.
3. Q I lost my bookmarks how do I get them back?
A Some bookmarks haven't been converted for some people, for others it
works fine. In any
case, you can copy them over yourself renaming bookmark.htm from N4.X to bookmarks.html
for N6.x
NS 6.5 will be a major new release. NS6.00 is essentially a beta. NS 6.01 is a
maintenance
release to fix the most serious issues (memory, stability, etc.)

The browser is sleek and cutting-edge, with top-notch password
management and protection against spyware and phishing.
The interface is a tad different. With this browser, nothing is as it seems. If you do a lot of surfing, the the Multibar will impress you. This browser seems to be based solely on Mozilla's biggest hit, Firefox and utilizes some of the Microsoft Internet Explorer standards. We like the interfaces and it does give you the feeling that your surfing with a sports car rather than a dump truck. Tabbed browsing seems to have evolved with this release also. It took a little time to get used to it but once you do, it is great. You'll find the options for customizing this browser under Tools | Options a clear nod to the Microsoft Internet Explorer community. Gone are the old Edit | Preferences menus. This is not an upgrade to Netscape 7.2, it is a whole new browser and a whole new browsing experience.
What's not there:
What's
not there is the old mail and news feeds, (These will be handled by Web mail
such as Netscape Web mail, Hotmail and the like), nor the familiar Netscape Composer.
While Composer was a bare bones HTML editor we found it useful and
like the idea of it being bundled with the browser. It was the best of
all worlds. Unfortunately it is dead on arrival in Netscape version
8.0. We find this regrettable. There are some free alternative but some are hard
to understand and others require a certain level of HTML coding knowledge. You
can find some of them on our Freeware

With this release Netscape was true to their word and you can now utilize any search site you wish. The default is Google. No surprise there.
The Search tab in My Sidebar is a quick way to use your favorite search engine without having to leave the page you are currently viewing. You can search using a number of pre-configured search engines, or you can add others.
Search results are shown in the results list.
Click on a page to view it in the main browser window. As you view each page, the search results remain listed in My Sidebar—no more jumping back and forth between the results and your search engine!
To search from My Sidebar:
1. Type one or more keywords in the Search field.
2. Choose a search engine by clicking the down arrow next to the "using" field. (You can change your default search engine, as described in Selecting a Search Engine.)
3. Click the Search button. Matching pages display in the Search Results list.
4. Click on a link to display the selected page in your browser.
5. To scroll through the list of search results, use the Next and Previous buttons at the bottom of the panel.
The Side Bar: Rather than open multiple web pages, programs, and windows to perform common tasks, My Sidebar is an easy, efficient way to store these features all in one place. You can customize My Sidebar to include features such as web searching, news headlines, maps, and more.
Netscape Browser includes a number of default My Sidebar panel, but you can also search for and add new tabs, or even create your own!
Importing settings: On start-up, the browser offers to import bookmarks, cookies, and history from other browsers. I had it import settings from both IE and Firefox, and the browser was able to manage that successfully.
Configurable toolbars:
Netscape
allows you to set up ten different personal toolbar rows — the
company calls them "Multibars," and each row is a
"Custom Toolbar" — configurable by clicking on buttons
marked with numerals. Each custom toolbar row can include buttons that
take the user to different sites. That's very useful for users who
have a lot of URLs they visit regularly, but I don't like the
conventional means of managing bookmarks. Bookmarks are handled very
similar to Firfox's but the multiple toolbar configuration and how to
customize it had me scratching my head for a bit.
All things being equal, we liked the browser but question using the
MSIE standards. We have to wonder if the same problems which vex
Microsoft might find their way into Netscape 8.0 as well. Don't take my word for it, go
get your own copy. It will live nicely with your current Netscape 7.2
browser, Firefox, Mozilla's, or even MSIE. Well, Microsoft is saying
that it won't live with MSIE. I wonder why they would say that? We
have had no problem. In any event, you'd better See

If Microsoft is contemplating what their new Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 is going to be, it wouldn't hurt them to check out Netscape 8.0. Microsoft is going to have a long row to hoe if they plan on catching up. Well friends, the Browser Wars are back in full force and the winners are going to be.... us!

on Wednesday, January 25, 2006, released its latest browser, version 8.1, which
adds features designed to better protect Web surfers against online scams such
as spyware and phishing.
Other security features include an updated blacklist of potential phishing sites and a security center people can access to see if they need to take action on their computer.

Netscape releases update to version 8.0.3.1 to address two security flaws
The two security flaws which have been documented are a code execution through shared function objects issue, in which "improper cloning of base objects allowed web content scripts to walk up the prototype chain to get to a privileged object," and a problem where "standalone applications can run arbitrary code through the browser" whereby when a media playser such as Flash or Quicktime opens a URL in the Netscape browser “if the external URL was a javascript: url it would run as if it came from the site that served the previous content, which could be used to steal sensitive information such as login cookies or passwords. If the media player content first caused a privileged chrome: url to load then the subsequent javascript: url could execute arbitrary code.”
The new release also fixes “remaining history syncing issues between rendering engines” and other bugs and crash issues, says Netscape.
