Browser wars: Software empire pays high price When Microsoft saw Netscape's browser as a threat to its future, the software giant poured billions of dollars into research, marketing and legal fees.   New in software: What's going on with browsers?
  Remember when the browser wars transfixed the tech world, drew the line between big business and evil business, and led to lawsuits and years-long court battles that eventually threatened to split Microsoft in two? Yeah, well, browsers are totally tired now. After all that, Microsoft announced in early June that it simply won't be developing a standalone version of Internet Explorer anymore (and it's ditching the Mac version, too). Meanwhile, just last week, Netscape released an update to its still-standing browser, even as former Netscape exec (and cofounder) Marc Andreessen said, "There hasn't been any innovation on the browser in the last five years, and five years from now there won't be any changes." Are browsers dead? Well, we all know the Internet's not going anywhere, so the question is, what's next?

  The Bo's Eye View: Admittedly we have become sorta jaded when it comes to the new and improved everything. We lost our interest in browsers long ago. Yeah, we downloaded and installed Netscape 7.1 fully believing that it would correct some annoying bugs and throw a ton more at us. We also thought that there wouldn't be anything very new in this addition. I am delighted to say that we were WRONG! NS 7.1 has some interesting features which save you steps and can make the browsing experience a tad more, well, browsable. We were also impressed with the speed in which it opened new windows or tabs on the first time to a site. Okay Microsoft, you think you won the browser wars? You think Netscape is a dead issue? I loved MSIE 6.0, fully hated Netscape 7.02 but ya know something Bill? You may think you have won, but if this addition of Netscape is a sign, perhaps you should rethink your idea of bilking the public by only bundling MSIE's next version with LongHorn (Beta name of Microsoft's next Windows project). There are some small annoyances in NS but only the power browser types will notice them and the general browser fanatic will love NS 7.1. I do! For me to say that, ya know I am impressed with this newest addition. Best advise from the Bomister? Head on over to the Netscape website and grab a copy...you won't be sorry.

  
  

   

  First Take: Opera 7.0 for Windows Beta 1
  The top alternative vote-getter in the browser field, Opera, has released a public beta of version 7.0 for Windows. C|Net took a sneak peek at this preview and found a more mature version with some powerful tools. Will Opera 7.0 rekindle a new browser war? Get an early taste here.

  Sure, Microsoft's Internet Explorer has had its fair share of security breaches. But now there's news of a privacy breach in software that incorporates Mozilla's open source-based Web browsing technology. At risk are users of Mozilla, Netscape 7, and Linux-based Galeon. When exploited, the vulnerability reveals to a Web server the URL of the last site that the user visited. Until Mozilla's caretakers come up with a fix, users are advised to disable Javascript.

• New Mozilla browser is faster, easier to use
  The new Mozilla browser is out--and it has enough improvements to keep the browser wars alive. Mozilla 1.1, the latest version of the open-source Web browser, comes just two months after the release of 1.0. It offers improved stability and Web-page compatibility, along with better application and rendering performance. A number of minor features have been added, too, such as an improved Download Manager, better drag-and-drop capabilities, and distinct icons for various Mozilla apps. These improvements won't only benefit Mozilla users. The technologies developed for Mozilla are also used in Netscape's browser, and in open-source browsers such as Galeon.

• First Take: MSN 8.0 Beta
  Redmond has been talking up the newest version of MSN for months, and now, the proof"s in the pudding. Testers have their hands on the beta of MSN 8.0, and so far, this ISP looks and works better than past versions. The great No. 8 even has antispam tools and improved parental controls. But will MSN topple AOL?

MSN Explorer Full and Final Release Has Arrived

MSN Explorer has finally been release in a 5 MB download. Think of MSN as My first Browser. It is great for those that are new to the net, those who can't quite seem to master Netscape 4.76 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5's quirks, or for the kids.

Those who use either Netscape or I.E. 5.5 will be horribly disappointed however. MSN is great if you like fluff or if you are a huge Gate's fan. MSN is a blatant attempt to take market shares away from AOL (New owners of Netscape, in case anyone is keeping score).

MSn does have some good entertainment features, like its abillity to seemlessly migrate to Media Player 7.0 for videos, music and radio stations.

Be warned, check out, "Don't Touch that Beta", for a glimpse into the strategy of the boys from Redmond.

Still, its only 5 MB about 16 minutes with a 56 K modem so why not check it out. Be aware however of MSN beta versions propensity toward being Melissa in slow motion. You can bet that there are still some left overs' from the beta versions.

Go ahead, might as well be brave and check it out.

IE 5.5 GORES OUTLOOK 98 ET. AL.

Internet Explorer 5.5 breaking Office 2000 Detect & Repair, and also IE 5.5 also breaks Outlook 98. Not that I recommend you run Outlook 98, mind you - there are easier and cheaper ways to lose your sanity - but if you're stuck with Outlook 98 and install IE 5.5, there's no way you can print graphics in any email you may receive that contains graphics (HTML email).

As a rule of thumb, if you are using Windows 2000 and/or Outlook 98, I suggest you skip installing I.E. 5.5. See Microsoft's Knowledgebase article Q279/1/77

The article states, quite simply (and I believe accurately) that the "Error 1931" bug only occurs on some systems, and not on others. Microsoft has a fix - a hot patch - for the bug, but they only recommend that folks install it if they absolutely need it, because it hasn't been fully tested on a wide variety of machines. The Knowledge Base article tells you how to contact Microsoft and ask for the patch - it is NOT available for download. The internal (Microsoft Eyes Only) version of that Knowledge Base article tells the whole story:

Anyway, I'll repeat my recommendation: if you're using IE 5.01 Service Pack 1 (see http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/download/ie501SP1.htm ), stick with it. IE 5.5 isn't worth the headaches: all it really offers is print preview, and you can live without that. On the other hand, if you have IE 5.5 installed and it's working fine, don't sweat it. Life's too short. In my experience, you won't have any problems, as long as Office 2000 Detect & Repair is working OK, and your machine hasn't gone up in flames so far.

If you have IE 5.5 and want to uninstall it, check out Ed Bott's detailed instructions at http://windows.about.com/compute/windows/library/weekly/aa092100a.htm . You folks who wrote in with problems concerning vgx.dll and unexplained BSDs (Blue Screens of Death) that are apparently tied to IE 5.5 should try Ed's approach.
